The aim of the job is to provide 1-1 assistance in all personal, social and work-related aspects of daily living to a retired female GP with a progressive physical disability, who now needs to use a powered wheelchair full-time, writes fiction and lives at home with her partner and two labradors.

Personal Assistants are needed to assist and enable me to live my life independently in the way I choose. PAs will assist me to do this by listening to what I need/want and helping me - with my direction. It is therefore vital that those assisting me have empathy and excellent communication skills. Privacy and confidentiality will be critical. I try to live my life respecting others regardless of their gender, race, religion, age, ethnic background, sexuality, and/or disability - Any PA would also need to share these values.

The job involves assisting me with a variety of tasks at home, at my work and in the community. Like most people, I have a a daily routine which can vary, so it is difficult to list every task I may need assistance with. As my needs change so will the level of assistance.

After a period of familiarisation with the tasks, my PA will be required to assist me; sometimes without close direction, to create a comfortable homely environment. My PAs will therefore need to be able to use their own initiative - and when requested take direction. Open communication will be critical.

A willingness to work within the philosophy of Independent Living is necessary – on the job training will be provided and manual handling is compulsory. You do not have to be strong to do the job well, but a general level of good health will be important.

The job will require the following, should the need arise:

Assistance with showering / bathing / drying

Assistance with dressing and undressing

Assistance with washing hair

Assistance with transferring me – into and out of my wheelchair from bed, into and out of the car and charging the chair

Assistance with food preparation and cooking

Assistance with house-hold duties

Assistance with exercising

Assistance when attending meetings – online or on Zoom

Assistance with my work: light office work (photocopying, typing, filing, setting up workstation)

Assistance with attending social events (day and night)

Occasional overnights

Other tasks as required with agreement

Your own transport will be necessary, as you will be coming to and leaving work, both early in the morning and late in the evening.

You would be expected to cover other PAs’ time off with planning, and sometimes when emergencies might arise.

One month’s trial for both me and PA, with a six-month probation period.

I would appreciate two months’ notice when leaving/ending employment.

The contract of employment is with Inlet Independence Company Limited by Guarantee

Confidential Garda vetting via the HSE will be required.

General working hours will be:

8.30am – 1pm

3pm – 4.30pm

8.30pm – 10pm

Rate of pay: €20:00 per hour, Mondays – Fridays

€23:00 per hour, Evenings and Saturdays

€30:00 per hour, Sundays and Bank Holidays

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: €20.00-€30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 11.00 – 30 per week
