Phd Candidate In Econometrics, Mathematical Economics Or Operations Research

The Department of Quantitative Economics at Maastricht University School of Business and Economics is looking to fill a PhD position in the field of Game Theory and/or Mathematical Economics.

Job Description
The intended working field for the PhD position is in the field of game theory and/or Mathematical Economics. The position is fully funded for four years, according to the labour agreement of Dutch universities and contains a moderate teaching load of at most 25%. The intended starting date is 1 September 2025.

The research for the PhD student should align with one of the staff members of the department. The preference for this position is for candidates who are interested in topics in non-cooperative games such as Bayesian games and strategic form games with infinite action spaces. But also candidates with a broader interest in game theory, economic theory, or mathematical economics are invited to apply. Specific research proposals, possibly including suggested alignment with specific staff members, are welcome, but not required.

Requirements

Candidates need to hold a master's degree (or be close to completion) in mathematics, theoretical economics, theoretical physics, operations research, or an equivalent study program. Strong mathematical skills are required. Good proficiency in English (both oral and written) is required.

Candidates are expected to start preferably September 1. We offer 4-year positions. We have a large and culturally diverse PhD community in our department, and welcome enthusiastic, talented new PhD students. PhD positions are paid positions, with minimal teaching obligations.

What we offer
As a PhD candidate at the School of Business and Economics, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

• Good employment conditions. The position is graded according to UFO profile PhD, with corresponding salary from €2901,00 in the first year and €3707,00 gross per month in the fourth year (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
• An employment contract for a period of 18 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon a positive evaluation, an extension of 2.5 years will follow.
• At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.

About the department
The department of Quantitative Economics of Maastricht School of Business and Economics conducts research in the area of Actuarial Sciences, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics and Game Theory, and Operations Research. Members of the department teach in the BSc and MSc programme in Econometrics & Operations Research as well as several quantitative courses in other BSc and MSc programmes of SBE. Both in teaching and research the department achieves excellent standards. The department publishes papers in highly ranked international scientific journals, such as Journal of Econometrics, Games and Economic Behaviour, and Operations Research.
