One PhD position in bioorganic chemistry is available in the group of Professor Jasmin Mecinovic at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy , University of Southern Denmark. Starting date of the position will be 1 March 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Project background
Posttranslational modifications on nucleosomal core and linker histone proteins are central to transcriptional regulation in eukaryotes and are thus of fundamental importance to complex life. In contrast to advanced biomolecular understanding of core histones, the basic molecular knowledge on linker histones is currently limited. As a PhD student, you will work on the Novo Nordisk Foundation NERD-funded project aimed at developing innovativechemical tools that will enable precise elucidation of roles of linker histones and their posttranslational modifications in the chromatin structure and function. You will apply modern bioorganic chemistry and chemical biology approaches, ranging from peptide and protein synthesis to enzyme assays and protein binding studies, in investigations of biologically important linker histones.
Research group
The Mecinovic group applies chemical principles and techniques to understand the underlying molecular origin of fundamental biomolecular processes that play essential roles in human health and disease. The group is international, cross-disciplinary and gender-balanced. The successful candidate will receive excellent training, mentoring and career development support.
Qualifications
Specific Requirements
- MSc in chemistry, medicinal chemistry or biochemistry;
- Experience with bioorganic chemistry;
- Experience with peptide or protein research;
- Strong motivation and interest in working at the interface between chemistry and biology;
- Excellent skills in written and spoken English.
The PhD position will either be as 4+4 or 5+3.
