The Research group of Jens S. Andersen invites applications from outstanding candidates who are interested in joining our team as a PhD fellow at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology , University of Southern Denmark , Odense. The position is available for three years from November 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Research Project and Role
As a PhD fellow you will be engaged in interdisciplinary projects covering functional and structural studies of protein-protein and protein-RNA complexes. The primary methodologies that you will apply include CRISPR-mediated gene editing for tagging of proteins for protein proximity labeling and affinity enrichment to identify interaction partners by mass spectrometry-based proteomics. You will also have the possibilities to develop new methods. The proteomics data will be used in combination with protein structure predictions and functional studies to understand the structure, function, and assemble of multimeric protein complexes.
You will interact and collaborate closely with other researchers in the Jens S. Andersen group and together with collaboration partners at University of Copenhagen and Aarhus University as well as with members of the Biomedical Mass Spectrometry and Systems Biology Section at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Lab and Research Environment
You will be part of the research group led by Prof. Jens S. Andersen (Andersen group) at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) at SDU. The Andersen group is associated with the ‘Biomedical Mass Spectrometry and Systems Biology research unit’ at BMB and the ‘Danish National Mass Spectrometry Platform for Proteomics and Biomolecular Imaging’ (PLATO), which provides a highly international, collaborative, ambitious and innovative research environment in mass spectrometry-based proteomics. You will have access to state-of-the-art facilities (e.g., proteomics and bioimaging) and extensive expertise in functional proteomics. This international, well-equipped, highly ambitious and supportive research environment therefore provides a great setting for pursuing novel research ideas and developing your independent career.
We offer:
- A research position available for three years in a stimulating and supportive, international research environment.
- Access to state-of-the-art equipment, facilities, and infrastructure within proteomics, including a unique collection of advanced instrumentation for mass spectrometry (Orbitrap Exploris 480 and Orbitrap Astral from Thermo Fisher Scientific, and timsTOF Pro and timsTOF Omnitrap from Bruker) and for bioimaging (Abberior facility line STED, MINFLUX, Nikon 3D STORM and Nikon dual cam SIM).
- Opportunity to exchange knowledge, discuss project progress, and visit collaboration partners for cross-laboratory research projects and environmental exchange as part of the PhD education.
- Opportunity to interact with a wider network of national and international collaborators.
- Opportunity to develop your own ideas within our research frame.
- A competitive salary and social benefits (e.g. health coverage, parental leave, social security etc.).
- Dedicated assistance and support with various practical, social, and legal aspects (housing, visa, administration, tax etc.), especially for international candidates through our international staff office (ISO) and department.
Your Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated, innovative, and collaborative PhD fellow with:
- A recent academic education with a master’s degree in biochemistry, biomedicine, molecular biology, protein science, analytical biochemistry, or similar field
- Experience in mass spectrometry-based proteomics, structural biology, or CRISPR-mediated gene editing
- Proficiency in computational data analysis
- Strong communication and collaborative skills and an interest in working in an international and interdisciplinary environment
- An open and positive mind to contribute positively to the success and well-being of the research team
- In addition to research, the applicant must be able to teach and advise students
- Applicants will primarily be evaluated based on their documented international scholarly achievements
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
