Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

This role will provide fun and dynamic Pilates classes for UBC students, faculty, staff, and community users through the administration of UBC Recreation’s Yoga & Pilates membership program. The ideal candidate for this role is knowledgeable, professional, and provides excellent customer service, while tailoring classes towards participants of different fitness levels accordingly. It is also important to maintain clear communication with patrons during program sessions and the Fitness Programs Manager in regards to administrative procedures.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The UBC Recreation Fitness Programs department is responsible for programming ongoing fitness programs at the Student Recreation Centre (SRC), the ARC at UBC Life Building, Recreation Centre North (REC North) and Ponderosa Commons studio, as well as private programs on- and off-campus for campus partners. UBC Recreation’s Fitness & Classes program is membership-and-registration-based and lead by various instructors. This position is vital to the UBC Athletics and Recreation’s vision of creating a healthy, active, and connected community, where one is mindful of and nurtures their wellbeing during their UBC experience. Instructors are responsible for leading at least 1 class per week during scheduled term.

Their duties include, but are not limited to:

· Arriving early to prepare to host participants in the programming space

· Following sub-request policies diligently and providing advance notice of absence

· Leading and instructing individuals and groups through carefully-structured program sessions

· Gauging fitness levels of various groups/classes and adjusting the program curriculum(s) during the beginning of the term

· Providing quality instructions to all participants varying in age and abilities

· Demonstrating and teaching basic to intermediate skills

· Monitoring and assisting with the safety of the participants

· Answering participants’ inquiries in person and relay any pertinent concerns to the Fitness Programs Manager

· Assisting in various housekeeping tasks, for example, locking the studio and storage room doors after a class

· Covering other scheduled sessions that requires a substitute, if available

· Completing the on-boarding paperwork and orientation

· Performing other duties as necessary

LEVEL OF SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position will report directly to the Fitness Programs Manager. In this role, instructors will work independently to lead the scheduled program sessions. Instructors are expected to understand and comply to UBC Recreation’s policies and procedures, as well as, to defer judgments and decisions in regards to the programming and operations of the fitness programs to the Manager. Instructors maintain regular contact with the Manager through email, phone and in-person interactions.

Qualifications

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS

- Pilates Instructor certification

- Able to work at lunch times, evenings, and/or weekends
- Able to sub-in on other weekly classes

- Enthusiastic, organized and responsible

OPTIMAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Current Yoga-Alliance-approved 200-hour Yoga Instructor Certification

- Advanced/auxiliary yoga teacher certifications

- Experience in instructing regular Pilates classes

- Strong relationship-building skills

- Ability to learn quickly and exercise sound judgment to solve problems

ELEMENTS NEEDED TO BE A GREAT FIT
Candidates that would fit well within the position are those that have a sound knowledge of fitness theory and strong relationship building skills. Candidates that show leadership qualities, work independently and have the natural ability to lead and command a group of people would be excellent fits, as well as those who are able to exercise sound judgment and can solve problems in high stress situations. Someone who is enthusiastic about maintaining health and wellness through fitness class instruction and can attest to those particular passions would be an ideal candidate for this position.

Training and Orientation

UBC A&R uses different types of training to ensure that all types of learners are reaching their highest potential. All staff will go through online training modules, then go through facility specific training and orientation. The purpose behind the different learning components is to ensure all types of candidates are able to succeed and engage in the training process.

All staff will receive the following training:
- Job specific orientation: both online learning and in-person sessions
- Detailed facility tours and orientation
- Building Emergency Response training
- Work Safe in-person training and orientation
- Access and Diversity training workshops on equity and inclusivity
- Preventing and Addressing Workplace Bullying & Harassment training

Compensation Range

Level 1 Instructor - $45.00 - $55.00 CAD per hour

Level 2 Instructor - $55.00 - $65.00 CAD per hour

Level 3 Instructor - $65.00 - $80.00 CAD per hour

New Pilates instructors at UBC will start as either a Level 1 or Level 2 instructor, depending on their qualifications and experience. Level 1 instructors are certified and have some moderate experience teaching, whereas Level 2 instructors have advanced certifications/experience, more extensive teaching experience, and the ability to instruct different styles of classes. Upon hire, instructors who consistently meet performance expectations and achieve participation goals may be eligible for promotion to the next level and corresponding pay band.
