  • Temporary full-time opportunity 12 month (35 hours per week) + creation of talent pool for vacancies that may become available over the next 18 months

  • PO1B Salary relative to experience and ranges from $115,853 to $130,547 + super

The Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure improves the liveability and prosperity of NSW. The Development Assessment and Systems Directorate within the Department assesses and regulates development proposals, focusing on balancing community, environmental, and economic needs, and determining proposals for major development, including state significant projects.

The role
The Planning Officer Assessments role within the Social Infrastructure Assessment Team plays an important role in delivering high‑quality, timely and consistent assessment advice that supports the progression of State significant projects and contributes to broader state, regional and local planning objectives.
Working across major development types including hospitals, schools, TAFEs, universities, cultural facilities and major recreation projects
You will assess complex proposals against statutory obligations, Government policy and best‑practice frameworks to help achieve strategic infrastructure, economic and growth outcomes. Through preparing clear reports and documentation, developing effective conditions of consent, responding to stakeholder enquiries and supporting the refinement of systems and processes, you will enable informed decision‑making, efficient team operations and the successful implementation of Government and Department planning priorities. Strong analytical capability, sound judgement and a solutions‑focused approach will be essential to evaluating key issues, identifying innovative options and ensuring timely, customer‑focused service delivery.

Key knowledge and experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant planning and environmental legislation and processes
  • Proven experience supporting planning projects
  • Experience preparing clear written material and providing planning advice, such as reports, briefing notes, and responses to stakeholder enquiries, with the ability to translate technical planning information into plain English
  • Experience in the assessment of development applications

Essential requirements
  • Tertiary degree qualification or other equivalent qualification
  • Willingness to travel and Class C Driver’s Licence for regional positions
