A two-year postdoc position is available in the research group of Algorithmic Cheminformatics at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). The position is in an exciting 6-year project supported by the Challenge Programme of the Novo Nordisk Foundation: “Mathematical Modelling for Microbial Community Induced Metabolic Diseases”, led by Prof. Daniel Merkle.
The expected starting date is 1 Januar 2026, with room for flexibility in both directions.
We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a PhD in computer science, computational chemistry / biochemistry, applied mathematics, or a related area. The ideal candidate has strong familiarity with several of the following subjects: algorithmics, mathematical modelling, graph transformation, algorithm engineering. Applications of these areas to systems chemistry, systems biology, metabolic networks, or microbial communities is an advantage but not a must. Solid competences in programming and ease with formal thinking are prerequisites.
The project is based on the novel application of formalisms, algorithms, and computational methods from computer science to the modeling of microbial communities, for use in health science. We aim to expand these methods and their formal foundations, create efficient algorithms and implementations of them, and ultimately use these implementations for research in understanding the functionality and stability of intestinal microbial communities. See https://www.sdu.dk/en/forskning/matomic/about for more details.
The research group in Algorithmic Cheminformatics at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at SDU offers a dynamic research environment, comprising two full professors, one associate professor, one assistant professor, one postdoc, and a large number of PhD students. The project includes strong partnerships with the University of Leipzig (Bioinformatics, Prof. Peter Stadler), the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Leipzig (Molecular Systems Biology, Prof. Martin von Bergen) and the University of Vienna (Department of Theoretical Chemistry, Prof. Christoph Flamm), who may potentially host the postdoctoral researcher for extended visits.
The research group is located at the main campus of SDU, which is located in Odense, the third largest city in Denmark. Denmark is known for its high standards of living, free health care, and competitive salaries. Applicants from outside Denmark are eligible for substantial tax reductions. Detailed information on salaries, taxation, and entering and working in Denmark can be found at https://www.sdu.dk/en/om-sdu/job-sdu/international-staff.
