We are now looking for

a Postdoctoral researcher

to join us in the Nano and Molecular Systems Research Unit at the Faculty of Science for a three-year fixed-term position to support our research in atomic and molecular physics, with a particular emphasis on electron and ion spectroscopic methods, such as Photoelectron-Photoion Coincidence (PEPICO).

The Nano and Molecular Systems Research Unit (NANOMO) at the University of Oulu is a dynamic collective of researchers and students working across a wide range of topics—from atmospheric research to functional nanomaterials and biomedical physics. NANOMO focuses especially in synchrotron radiation-based research and coordinates Finland’s participation in the MAX IV facility. Strategically, the unit focuses on Advanced Characterization, Hydrogen and Energy, and Quantum Materials and Computing, contributing to the green and digital transition through interdisciplinary and international collaboration.

About the job

Your Tasks Will Include:

  • Conducting and contributing to advanced experimental campaigns in electron and ion spectroscopy, especially PEPICO.
  • Designing and performing experiments, including sample preparation, data acquisition, and analysis.
  • Supervising postgraduate, MSc, and BSc students involved in spectroscopic research.
  • Participating in teaching and mentoring activities within the unit.
  • Preparing and submitting applications for external research funding (e.g., Research Council of Finland, Business Finland, Horizon Europe, and other foundations).

Who are you?

What We Expect:

  • A PhD in physics, chemistry, or a closely related field, with a specialization in atomic and molecular physics. The degree must be obtained no more than 10 years ago.
  • Proven experience in electron and ion spectroscopic techniques, particularly PEPICO, and associated data analysis.
  • Familiarity with both synchrotron-based and laboratory-based spectroscopic instrumentation.
  • Experience in writing and submitting research funding proposals.
  • Excellent command of English.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.

Considered an Advantage:

  • Hands-on experience in the design, construction, and maintenance of spectroscopic instrumentation.
  • Programming skills relevant to data acquisition and analysis (e.g., Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB).
  • Experience with statistical data analysis and/or AI-based methods.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Participation in international and interdisciplinary research collaborations.
  • Teaching experience, especially in topics related to spectroscopy or experimental physics.

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 3 years.

The salary will be based on the levels 5-6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approx. 3800-4200 € per month (before taxes).

A trial period of 6 months is applied for the position.
