The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position (Computing, Medical Technologies) at the School of Computing on the Joensuu Campus. The position will be filled for a fixed term of two years as from 1 October 2025 (or as agreed).

Role and salary

We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Eye sensing -based AD Monitoring for Everyday Life research project in the School of Computing at the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology. In this project, we explore and develop artificial intelligence (AI) methods to enable eye sensing -based Alzheimer's disease (AD) monitoring in everyday life from a freely moving person. The Postdoctoral Researcher will be part of a team of researchers investigating various aspects of human factors in medical technologies.

As our new Postdoctoral Researcher your main responsibilities include:

  • conducting computational modeling work using artificial intelligence methods, focusing on eye-movement data
  • participating in the acquisition of new datasets using state-of-the-art technologies
  • participating in the practical preparation and running of the studies in collaboration with the research team
  • implementing proactive technologies and modelling.

The project is carried out in a multidisciplinary consortium consisting of clinical and computing researchers in Joensuu (University of Eastern Finland), Helsinki (Helsinki University Hospital) and Oulu (VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd). The project group consists of specialists with complementary skills and expertise in medical topics (neurology): an expert with focus on degenerative disease research and diagnostics; an expert in behavioural oculography and eye sensing, and an expert in oculography and bio-signal -based cognitive state estimation and AI-methods for bio-sensing data fusion.

The position will be filled for a fixed term of two years from 1 October 2025 (or as agreed). The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific project task. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. For a Doctoral Researcher, the job-related salary element is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff depending on the stage of the applicant's doctoral research and postgraduate studies. The personal salary element is 6–50% of the job-related salary element. At the beginning of the employment the total salary will be approximately EUR 3,825 – 4,020 /month.

Our requirements and expectations

Requirements:

  • a doctoral degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Data Science, Cognitive Science or another relevant field. The person to be appointed as a Postdoctoral Researcher must have completed their doctoral degree less than five years ago at the time of starting in the position (a net period of time, which does not include parental leaves, military service etc.). If the person to be appointed received their doctoral degree more than five years ago, the position will be filled as a Project Researcher.
  • good skills in spoken and written English
  • strong experience with machine learning, signal processing, or computer vision
  • expert knowledge and skills related to computation cognitive modelling, with focus on eye-movement signals and/or other physiological signal analysis
  • demonstrated scientific research experience through high-quality publications

The following will be considered an advantage:

  • VR/XR skills and unity/unreal -based setups

Haemme tutkijatohtoria Itä-Suomen Yliopiston BREYENGRAPH: silmä-pohjainen AD monitorointi arkielämään -tutkimusprojektiin.
