Cary, NC is home to several premier sports facilities, including WakeMed Soccer Park and USA Baseball National Training Complex. Our Premier Athletic Field Maintenance Technicians are responsible for preparing and maintaining these athletic fields and facilities. The Premier Athletic Field Maintenance Technician is assigned to one of Cary's professional level fields. The ideal candidate possesses a high level of technical knowledge in turf management and ability to support high quality and high visibility events. The candidate must be able to work independently as well as on assigned crews, as a Premier Athletic Field Maintenance Technician may be the only maintenance personnel on duty during events and may lead other facility maintenance workers, temporary and/or seasonal staff, and facility attendants.
The work of a Premier Athletic Field Maintenance Technician is distinguished from the work of all other Athletic Field Maintenance Technicians and Facilities Maintenance Workers in that they are assigned to Wake Med Soccer Park or USA Baseball Complex and their work will require a higher level of technical knowledge and education. As such, our premier technicians also have extensive contact with a variety of customers during high-profile events. Work is performed with general supervision from an Athletic Field Maintenance Crew Leader. This role may require weekend work or flexed schedule.
Facilities Management positions are "critical positions", meaning you may be required to report to work during adverse weather or other emergency situations, to maintain equipment and/or assist the division in any capacity necessary to continue Cary operations.
Typical Tasks
Provides support for events such as soccer games, baseball games, and tournaments;
Maintains presence during events to respond to field maintenance problems;
Maintains all facilities located in the complex to which assigned;
Provides assistance to TV crews in preparation for televising big events;
Operates equipment in cutting trees and limbs around facility;
Creates landscape designs around the park;
Makes decisions regarding application of pesticides;
Measures, lays off, paints lines and logos on fields prior to play;
Uses specialized equipment and technical knowledge to maintain turf at a high level;
Performs routine maintenance and repair on equipment;
Inspects facilities and fields to insure they are safe;
Works with hazardous weather response team for snow, ice, debris removal;
Performs other job-related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of turf management, landscaping and horticulture; Considerable knowledge of and skill in the use of specialty equipment used in turf management; Considerable knowledge of the sports played in the facilities to which employee is assigned; Considerable knowledge of the field dimensions for the sports played at assigned facility; General knowledge of plant growth characteristics and proper techniques for pruning and shaping; General knowledge of the species of flowers, trees, and shrubs indigenous to central North Carolina; General knowledge of the appropriate safety precautions of the work;
Ability to work effectively in a team environment; Ability to work independently in a high stress environment during games and tournaments; Ability to work effectively with outside crews; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with staff and the general public; Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; Ability to lead a work team.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in turf management or related field and some experience working in athletic field maintenance and/or turf management.
Possession a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Possession of a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory motor vehicle record, or the ability to obtain within 6 months.
Possession of a North Carolina Pesticide License ,or the ability to obtain within 6 months.
Hiring Preferences:
Sports field management work experience at a collegiate, semi-professional, or professional level sporting park.
Experience leading a team of turf management technicians.
Experience in facility management outside of the playing surfaces.
