Are you ready to make a meaningful impact in the justice sector?
We have established a new function within the Ministry's Office of the Deputy Secretary, Policy designed to support independent advisory groups across the Justice portfolio. These groups provide independent advice on their respective areas and require support in strategic governance, machinery of government, policy advice, and secretariat/coordination.
We are looking for a Principal Advisor and Advisor to help lead and deliver this important work. As these roles and the function, itself are new, you will have the rare opportunity to shape its direction and priorities. We are seeking motivated professionals who are willing to engage actively, bringing a collaborative mindset, facilitating work across the Ministry to ensure that advisory groups receive adequate support.
The Principal Advisor is responsible for leading and working closely with the Advisor to execute various functions, including:
- developing and presenting policy proposals
- strategic planning and oversight
- stakeholder engagement
- risk management
- and providing expert advice on the machinery of government including appointment processes.
Success in these roles ensures that advisory groups operate efficiently and effectively, contributing to the government's policy-making and implementation processes.

To be successful in this role, you will need:
- relationship skills: Experience managing relationships at all levels, handling nuances, and maintaining reciprocal networks
- leadership skills: Ability to take initiative, coach, and lead others in solving complex problems
- communication: Excellent communication skills, clearly conveying policy advice and work to internal and external stakeholders
- problem solving skills: Proven problem-solving abilities, comfortable with complexity and ambiguity, and capable of coaching colleagues
- initiative: Identifying potential needs and planning for organisational requirements to provide timely support
- judgement: Using political judgement, knowledge, and experience to anticipate risks and test ideas, analysis, and assumptions.

Utu ā-tau/Salary
Principal Advisor: The appointing salary for this role will be between $129,129 and $179,192 based on skills and experience.
Policy Advisor: The appointing salary for this role will be between $73,634 and $100,846 based on skills and experience.
