At The Treasury Te Tai Ōhanga we're creating a better future for New Zealand and everyone who calls our amazing country home. We're the Government's economic and financial advisor, working hard to raise the standard of living for everyone in Aotearoa, now and in the future.
Our talented people bring their diverse backgrounds and experiences to tackling New Zealand's biggest and most inter-connected issues. Every day, they are influencing, advising, and supporting Ministers, Crown CEOs and Government decision-makers to shape our country's collective tomorrow.
Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Role
Through this role you will shape and influence the Government's agenda for housing by providing advice on key work programmes aimed at addressing New Zealand's housing issues. As a Principal Analyst, you will:
- Use your generalist policy capability to navigate complex work programmes and translate theory into solutions-focused recommendations;
- Consider how funding and financing arrangements contribute to urban growth outcomes, such as investment in supporting infrastructure;
- Influence external and internal stakeholders to progress work programmes and advise Ministers in a constructive and persuasive manner;
- Collaborate with other experts to take a system view to provide strategic and co-ordinated advice on cross-cutting issues;
- Provide support to other staff through coaching and mentoring.
This will involve working closely with colleagues within the Treasury and across the public service to analyse financial, fiscal, and economic information, assess housing outcomes through a social investment lens, and advise how best to deliver improved housing and wellbeing outcomes that also support the Crown's short-, medium-, and long-term economic and financial stability.
Appointing salary for this role will be between $168,498 and $198,233 per annum, based on skills and experience.

We are committed to employing people, with a wide range of academic, cultural and social backgrounds and experiences, who represent the New Zealand community we serve.
This type of work requires people who are passionate about making a difference through providing free and frank advice based on sound and well-reasoned analysis. You would also bring to the role the ability to think strategically across multiple sectors given the critical linkages housing has with other government priorities such as infrastructure and social outcomes.
We are seeking candidates with a public sector/policy background and who are confident working with numbers, data, and evidence to develop well-rounded advice. Experience with the housing sector, public finance policy, Crown entities, and/or Budget processes would be an advantage but is not essential.
If you understand how to use your analytical, communication, and relationship skills to navigate complex policy problems, then we would like to hear from you.
