Mo te tunga | About the role
HUD's Maori Housing Policy team works at a system level to support improved housing outcomes for Maori.
As Principal Policy Advisor you will work in an interesting and dynamic environment providing advice to Ministers and across HUD on a range of critical housing policy issues and reforms. The Principal Policy Advisor is a subject matter leadership position in HUD. As part of the Policy team, the Principal Policy Advisor is responsible for supporting the overall capability of the team, including mentoring and coaching other team members.
Te Tuapapa Kura Kainga - Ministry of Housing and Development has two foundational documents - the Government Policy Statement on Housing and Urban Development and the 30-year Strategy for Maori Housing - MAIHI Ka Ora. A key part of the work will be:
- Proactively identify barriers to, and opportunities for, the improvement of housing policy and services for Maori.
- Providing advice on the potential impact of policy proposals on Maori communities.
- Developing tools to help other policy teams within HUD apply MAIHI Ka Ora to their policy work
Te Tuapapa Kura Kainga is strongly committed to addressing the disparities that exist for Maori in relation to housing, and in this role you will be responsible for:
- Partnering with the Policy Manager to drive the strategic policy agenda/setting direction for the team's policy work
- Providing policy advice and leading programmes of work and project teams on complex and sensitive areas
- Providing high quality primary policy advice, and also providing support to other teams providing primary policy advice (that is, you will also be providing second order advice)
- Effectively influencing through engagement and communication with senior stakeholders
- Enhancing the overall capability of the team through guiding and mentoring senior/ advisors in their day to day work
The salary range for this role is $141,632 - $173,105 + 3% KiwiSaver.
O wheako, o pukenga | About you
- Currently a Principal Policy Advisor with significant public policy experience. (You have at least 1 year's experience as a Principal Policy Advisor).
- Understanding of tikanga and the aspirations and challenges of iwi/hapu and whanau.
- You do not need to speak te reo Maori to do the role.
- You'll have an in-depth understanding of the current government context, policy agenda and priorities with the ability to demonstrate flexibility, adaptability and strategic agility as the needs and priorities of the Minister and the Ministry change.
- Passionate about housing as a foundation for whanau well being.
- Want to work to make a difference for Maori, through working on complex housing challenges
- Keen to work for a small, diverse team, dedicated to their work
- Like variety and are a hands-on person who likes to get things done
- Can confidently lead, plan and manage policy projects in a complex environment. You will be comfortable operating in ambiguous or sensitive areas while applying advanced frameworks and methods of analysis to identify policy problems, analyse the issues and identify the policy options.
- Experience in Maori focused policy is desirable but not required.
