Program Director, Nurse Aide

Position Description

DEFINITION:
To lead, direct, manage, supervise, plan, and coordinate the Nurse Aide programs, Career and College Promise (CCP)/Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway and Economic and Workforce Development Nurse Aide programs, for the college at the CFCC Wilmington Campus, North Campus, Burgaw Center and Alston W. Burke Center at Surf City; to coordinate assigned activities with other college departments, divisions, and outside agencies.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:


  • Receives administrative direction from the Department Chair, Nursing.
  • Exercises direct and indirect supervision over faculty and clerical staff.

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:


Essential Functions:

  • Provide leadership and management responsibility for workforce preparation in Nurse Aide Programs and activities that incorporate current technology and effective methods of instruction that meet the needs of employers.
  • Plan, direct, and participate in the instruction for Nurse Aide programs. The program director will be given a reduced teaching load to allow sufficient release time to ensure the needs of their programs are met, specifically, the management and administration of their program.
  • Review and choose textbook used to supplement the North Carolina Approved Nurse Aide I, II and Home Health Care curriculum.
  • Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores.
  • Participate in curriculum development, evaluation and change related to the North Carolina Approved Nurse Aide I, II and Home Health Care curriculum, rules, regulations and guidelines.
  • Monitor Instructor accuracy when recording student attendance, grades and performance; maintenance of student records.
  • Select, train, motivate and evaluate division faculty and staff; provide or coordinate instructor orientation, professional development of faculty and staff; Conduct staff meetings and work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination procedures.
  • Continuously monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; assess and monitor workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identify opportunities for improvement and review with the AVP.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for the Nurse Aide programs; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign work activities, projects and programs; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedure.
  • Coordinate and participate in the development and administration of the Nurse Aide program annual budget; direct the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; direct the monitoring of and approve expenditures; direct and implement adjustments as necessary.
  • Stay abreast of new developments and changes in various academic fields; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars and other continuing education programs as appropriate.
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area. Assure that all institutional, local, state, and national educational and certification guidelines are met as required.
  • Participate on college committees and in other institutional activities and programs.
  • Participate in a variety of student related administrative activities including reviewing admission requirements, progress and qualifications for completion. Review student records and maintain student records and data bases according to program needs or accreditation requirements.
  • Serve as liaison for The Nurse Aide program with other college departments, division, high schools, agencies, industries, organizations, and the media.
  • Recruit, interview, evaluate, and hire Nurse Aide I, II and Home Health Care instructors; develop and draft instructor contracts and necessary materials for instructors.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement faculty schedules to ensure an equitable allocation of course assignments.
  • Attend Department of Health and Human Services Eastern Regional Nurse Aide I meetings and participate in related committees.
  • Provide direction for the development, implementation and review of Career and College Promise (CCP)/Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway Nurse Aide program and EWD Nurse Aide program
  • Participate in all functions related to implementation of the programs systematic plan for evaluation.


Other Important Functions:

  • Assess material, supply, and equipment needs for Nurse Aide programs; submit requisitions for the ordering of supplies; maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Fill in for other instructors as needed.
  • Act as an advisor and counselor to students
  • Coordinate the academic program efforts to recruit and retain students; coordinate the development, review, and revision of program publications, publicity and other community relations’ activities
  • Coordinate the selection, use and maintenance of equipment and facilities assigned to the program; may identify, negotiate and contract for educational facilities and locations.
  • Represent the college to the community and outside organizations.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS


Knowledge of:

  • Organizational and management practices as applied to the planning, analysis and evaluation of programs, policies and operational needs.
  • Principles and practices of budget preparation and administration.
  • Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, local laws, and codes.
  • NC Board of Nursing (BON), and NC Department of Health and Human Services (DHSS), rules and regulations.
  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment.
  • Principles and practices of curriculum development and instructional strategies as related to the NC DHHS and NC BON approved curriculum.
  • Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures.
  • Current trends, research and development in the area of assignment.


Ability to:

  • Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Analyze problems; identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • Select, supervise, train and evaluate instructional staff.
  • Effectively direct the provisions of the academic area to which assigned in support of the college programs.
  • Gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion.
  • Oversee the preparation and administration of a departmental budget.
  • Conduct committee meetings in an effective and efficient manner.

Maintain effective audiovisual discrimination and perception needed for:

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:


Minimum Education/Training:

  • An Associate Degree is nursing is required, a bachelor’s degree in nursing is preferred.


Training/Licensure:

NC DHHSR and NC BON Requirements:

Must be a Registered Nurse, currently registered in North Carolina with an unencumbered license.


Have at least two (2) years of work experience as a registered nurse (4000 hours).


Have at least one (1) year (2000 hours) of Registered Nurse experience in the provision of Long-term care facility services demonstrated by:

  • Working in a long-term care facility licensed as a skilled nursing facility, or a skilled nursing facility which is a distinct part of a hospital, or
  • Supervising or teaching students in a long-term care facility licensed as a skilled nursing facility, or a skilled nursing facility which is a distinct part of a hospital.
