The Molecular Nanoengineering group at the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering (NBE), Aalto University (Finland), operates at the interface between nanotechnology, molecular self-assembly, and plasmonics, with a particular focus on DNA-based artificial molecular systems and functional plasmonic surfaces. The group is part of Aalto’s School of Science (SCI). The department is located at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus, providing a highly motivating multidisciplinary international research environment with excellent facilities and instrumentation.
We are now looking for
a Project Worker for developing a portable readout for anti-counterfeit labels.
Are you excited to build portable optical/electronic readout solutions for a next-generation security technology that combats counterfeiting?
We are now looking for a motivated team member to support the development of readout schemes for plasmonic anti-counterfeit labels. In this position, you will have a chance to make an impact by helping translate state-of-the-art research into a technology with strong commercial potential in the deep-tech sector. Join us in shaping the future!
Counterfeit products pose significant risks to the global economy and consumer safety. We are developing a next-generation security labelling technology that is verifiable, unclonable, and irretrievable, using advanced functional materials to create multi-layered security patterns with multiple security levels.
The project is linked to an ongoing Business Finland Research to Business (R2B) funding application. The position is fixed-term (6 months), with an expected 18-month extension as a project worker if R2B funding is secured, and the new team member should be willing to commit 100% to the R2B project upon securing funding.
Your role and goals
You will work alongside the existing team, focusing on developing a portable readout solution for plasmonic anti-counterfeit labels. Your key goal is to help create and validate practical readout approaches that support further technology development and exploration of commercial potential.
Tasks and responsibilities may include (depending on your experience):
-
Developing and testing readout concepts for plasmonic security labels.
-
Prototyping portable measurement/readout setups (hardware and/or optics, depending on your background).
-
Supporting data acquisition and analysis (e.g., imaging-based readout approaches).
-
Documenting results and collaborating closely with the research team toward project milestones.
Your network and team
You will join the Molecular Nanoengineering group at Aalto University and work in close collaboration with the existing project team. The work is connected to an R2B commercialisation pathway, offering exposure to research-to-innovation activities.
We have established a core team comprising a Business Champion and a Technical Champion (specializing in nanotechnology and materials science). We are now seeking a full-time third key member with complementary technical expertise. The team also has other supporting experts onboard.
Your experience and ambitions
We expect candidates to hold at least a B.Sc. degree (Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Robotics, Applied Physics or related field) and have a solid background in at least one of the following areas:
-
Electronics (including hardware design, sensor integration).
-
Optics (light–matter interaction, design of optical imaging systems).
-
Machine vision (including hyperspectral imaging and image analyses).
In addition, we value:
-
Strong communication skills.
-
Excellent analytical and experimental skills.
-
Ability to work independently toward project goals.
Language requirements:
-
EN: Professional proficiency in English is required.
-
FI: Finnish proficiency is highly valued.
If you want to work on a high-impact deep-tech challenge, developing real-world readout solutions for advanced, multi-level security labels, this role offers a unique chance to contribute at the intersection of plasmonics, devices, and applied innovation, within a strong multidisciplinary research environment to transition cutting-edge academic research into a viable commercial venture in the deep-tech sector.
What we offer
-
A meaningful project addressing the global challenge of counterfeiting, with strong potential to transfer cutting-edge research into a viable commercial venture.
-
A highly motivating, multidisciplinary, international research environment at Aalto’s Otaniemi campus with exceptional facilities and instrumentation.
-
A fixed-term position of 6 months, with a planned 18-month extension as a project worker if R2B funding is secured (and a clear role in the R2B project).
-
A competitive salary determined according to experience and qualification.
-
Meaningful and inspiring environment. We are proud of our purpose to shape a sustainable future. We spark the game changers of tomorrow, and renew society with research-based knowledge, creativity and an entrepreneurial mindset.

-
Responsible and meaningful role with true impact in our University’s/ School’s success, and in the end, in the wellbeing and development of our society.
-
Support, coaching and sparring when you feel you need it.
-
Great possibilities for competence development and learning. We constantly keep learning to find the most impactful ways to empower – and invest in – our people.
-
The position is full-time, and the annual workload for Aalto University's research and teaching staff is 1,612 hours. The employment contract includes occupational health services provided by Aalto University.
-
