The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people’s health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.

We have an opportunity available to join our regional team as Public Health Medicine Specialist. This is a senior role based in Tairawhiti in the Te Manawa Taki Regional Strategy and Operatons Team in the National Public Health Service (NPHS).

The primary purpose of the Public Health Medicine Specialist role is to:

• Provide professional leadership for the delivery of public health/population health across Tairawhiti.

• Lead relationships with local partners including but not limited to Iwi, local council, regional council, community organisations, NEMA and ports.

• Provide professional leadership in specific public health topics and functional areas across Te Manawa Taki Regional Public Health Service.

• Work in partnership with colleagues in Te Manawa Taki Regional Public Health Service to share responsibility for the professional quality of public health work.

• Undertake the statutory duties and responsibilities of a designated Medical Officer of Health.

• Provide public health medicine advice and guidance around the delivery of a cohesive, effective, and equitable health system to ensure better health outcomes for the population

• Participate in an on-call roster.

• The appointee will undertake their specialist/public health responsibilities and conduct themselves in all matters relating to their employment in accordance with best practice and the relevant ethical and professional standards and guidelines as determined by:

o Relevant College or Faculty of Public Health Medicine

o Health and Disability Commissioner

o Te Whatu Ora policies and procedures except to the extent they may be inconsistent with any other provision of the Multi-Employer Collective Agreement (MECA).

This Public Health Medicine Specialist role is for up to 1.0 full time equivalent.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

• Vocational registration in public health medicine.

• Already designated or able to be designated as a Medical Officer of Health.

• Experience in implementing Te Tiriti o Waitangi in action.

• Proven knowledge of equity models and practice in professional field.

• Understanding of the New Zealand health sector.

• Current Annual Practising Certificate or eligible for one.

• Experience advising and working with Kaupapa Māori Health and Social Services.

• Experience working with Pacific Health and Social Services.

• Leadership experience in a public health organisation.

• Recent public health service experience including cross sector working

• Current driver’s licence.

• Te Reo competence or a willingness to learn Te Reo Māori.
