Description

Fairfield County Public Transit is seeking a dispatcher to ensure the safe, efficient, and timely operation of transit services. Under the direct supervision of the operations manager, this position coordinates vehicle assignments, monitors driver performance, and provides clear direction to support safe and cost-effective transportation. Dispatchers play a key role in maintaining schedules, assisting drivers, and delivering excellent customer service.

Duties

  • Assign vehicles to scheduled runs and dispatch them as needed.
  • Monitor driver performance and route efficiency to ensure safety and compliance.
  • Provide direction and guidance to drivers in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Organize and route trips based on schedules and locations to maximize fleet performance.
  • Assign same-day and urgent trips while balancing operational priorities.
  • Maintain accurate trip records, update electronic and manual databases, and complete required paperwork.
  • Answer telephones and provide information to customers in a professional manner.
  • Assist drivers with questions, trip concerns, or performance-related issues.
  • Document and report no-shows, on-time performance concerns, and other service issues.
  • Communicate new trips or schedule changes to transportation providers.
  • Foster effective communication with drivers, office staff, management, and customers.
  • Provide feedback to leadership regarding provider performance and service delivery.
  • Ensure vehicle resources are utilized efficiently to meet demand.
  • Collect and reconcile fares at the end of each driver’s run.
  • Deliver daily safety messages to drivers four times per day.
  • Perform clerical duties and operate office equipment as required.
  • Drive vehicles as needed to support service.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Perform monthly checks on fire extinguishers, first aid kits and other PPE in buses.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be insurable under the Transit agency’s policy.
  • Ability to operate vans, passenger buses, wheelchair lifts, electronic devices, and other necessary equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Strong defensive driving skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally and compassionately with diverse populations, including elderly, disabled, or medically fragile individuals who may be experiencing distress.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure, while working collaboratively with colleagues and external partners.
  • Proficiency with two-way radios and standard office equipment (computers, copiers, fax machines, shredders, etc.).
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills; ability to manage large volumes of information.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Knowledge of GPS and GIS systems is preferred.
  • Detail-oriented with strong time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other Microsoft Office applications, as well as scheduling software.
  • Must successfully pass and maintain a DOT physical, pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, and a criminal background investigation.

Supplemental Information

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of previous employment verification, a criminal background check, and a post-offer medical examination, including drug and alcohol screening. Additionally, employees must continue to meet driver fitness standards as defined by the Job Essential Functions.
