The Opportunity
Are you an experienced and dedicated Operator with a can-do attitude? Do you have strong communication skills, and top-notch customer service skills? Do you enjoy working with a team? If so, then this could be the role for you! Reporting to the Parks and Transportation Supervisor, our Operators are an important part of the team, playing a fundamental role in the maintenance of the City’s assets and infrastructure to enhance the safety and quality of life for our citizens and overall community well-being. This position will perform a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of transportation infrastructure, construction, and maintenance of equipment.
Responsibilities
- Operation of a variety of equipment, including but not limited to: skid steers, backhoes, sweepers, graders, dozers, tandem trucks, excavators, loaders, vacuum truck, self-propelled and or self riding lawn mowers, chainsaws, and small power tools.
- Maintain, operate, and repair parks and open spaces, trails, outdoor sports facilities, green spaces, and the city cemeteries (weeding, watering, seeding etc.).
- Maintain, operate, and repair traffic signals, signs, pavement markings, roads, lanes, sidewalks, and trails.
- Responsible for snow and ice control, snow removal and sanding on roads, trails, sidewalks, and parking lots.
- Assist with water and sewer repairs.
- Perform maintenance or upkeep on all tools and equipment daily to ensure optimal performance.
- Keep detailed accurate records and logs daily in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Shovel snow, as well as outdoor rink construction and maintenance.
- Work assignments will depend on the season and will vary between Parks and/or Transportation.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 2 years of relevant experience in Transportation or Parks operations. Previous municipal experience is considered an asset.
- Possess and retain an Alberta Drivers License, minimum Class 3 with air brakes endorsement, with preference to Class 1 License.
- Strong interpersonal, customer service, oral, and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize and adapt to changing priorities.
- Standard First Aid and CPR, Defensive Driving, Temporary Work Zone Safety, Ground Disturbance Safety Training Level 1, Backhoe Certification, WHIMIS, Fall Arrest, IMSA Traffic Signal Tech 1, Work Zone Safety Tech, and Fall Arrest certifications are all assets.
- Heavy Equipment Operator Certification is considered an asset.
- Be part of an on-call roster on a rotational basis (every 10-12 weeks). There are times where weekend work or night shifts may be required.
- Knowledge of road repair, snow and ice control, traffic control systems, landscaping, storm maintenance, turf management, irrigation systems and cemetery operations.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, to work with internal departments, contractors, community members, and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of tools, with the ability to use technology.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations and the desire to contribute to a positive safety culture by adhering to all safety standards under OH&S and by compliance with all safe work practices, policies, directives, and procedures.
- Meet physical requirements, lifting of heavy goods and equipment up to 50lbs, standing and sitting for long periods of time, bending, kneeling, twisting etc., and working in all weather conditions.
- Ability to provide a clear criminal record check.
- Ability to provide a driver’s abstract that demonstrates safe and responsible driving behaviour.
