Research Assistant

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world’s leading public health universities. We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to work in the laboratory of Prof Brendan Wren. The new appointee will work on a project to use glycoengineering develop Shigella, Salmonella and Group A Strep glycoconjugate vaccines. The post-holder will join a vaccine research team of ten staff at the LSHTM. The post-holder will have an opportunity to contribute to publications in high impact international scientific journals and may have the opportunity to access further professional or academic development through staff development courses, teaching and research.

The successful applicant will have a relevant first degree in Microbiology, relevant laboratory experience in molecular biology as well as in general laboratory techniques, relevant analytical skills in bacterial glycoengineering, proven ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, as part of a research team, evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, demonstrated expertise in vaccine upscaling and development, demonstrated expertise in working with bacterial pathogens such as Shigella, Salmonella and Streptococci, familiarity with international standards for laboratory safety. The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE and fixed term until 31 December 2026. The post is funded by Right Foundation and is available from 1st January 2025.

The salary will be on the Academic Grade 5 scale in the range £39,182 - £44,847 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in Keppel Street London at LSHTM.
