Research Assistant in the laboratory of Brain Bank Singapore
Brain Bank Singapore is a national initiative established by the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, National Neuroscience Institute, National Healthcare Group and National University of Singapore for the post-mortem human tissues repository of pledged healthy and patient (with neurological conditions) donors.
The Brain Bank Singapore team works together to ensure the smooth procedure of brain and cerebrospinal fluid retrieval from registered donors within 24 – 48 hours after their death. Brain Bank Singapore is a Human Tissue Bank regulated by the MOH Human Tissue Framework under the Human Biomedical Research Act, for future research into various neurological conditions, which is one of the key focus areas for research in Singapore. A lab histologist is required to assist with tissue retrieval, dissection, record keeping, organization of tissue specimens and histology studies as well as other laboratory duties. This will ensure smooth operation in the laboratory aspects of Brain Bank Singapore in receiving, preparing and supplying brain tissues for research.
Responsibilities:
  • Assist with laboratory preparation to receive the donated human tissues for dissection and preservation
  • Assist in tissue dissection, record keeping, tissue specimen organisation
  • Perform histology studies which include formalin fixation and paraffin embedding, tissue sectioning (on microtome and cryostat), routine H&E staining, immunohistochemistry on pathology markers
  • Assist with tissue specimen preparation for shipping according to requirements
  • Laboratory housekeeping, procurement for items and equipment maintenance by liaising with vendors
  • Maintain and update laboratory inventory, risk assessments and safety audits
  • Track records of collected tissues for storage and processing
Competencies and Qualifications:
  • Diploma or Bachelor Degree in Biology or Medical Technology and related areas
  • Self-motivated and takes initiative
  • Meticulous, detail-oriented with strong organisation skills
  • Good time management and task prioritisation
  • Experience in working with human or animal tissue will be an advantage
