Job Summary:
The Dr. Greenblatt Laboratory, in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of British Columbia will be looking to hire a Research Assistant/Technician 2 at 100% FTE to join the team.

Organizational Status:
The Research Assistant will report directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Ethan Greenblatt.

Work Performed:
  • Carries out experiments related to understanding reproductive aging and determinants of oocyte quality.
  • Assists in the execution a high-throughput small molecule screen by performing animal dissections, tissue extractions, in vitro translation reactions and data analyses.
  • Assists with lab ordering.
  • Maintains Drosophila stocks.
  • Prepares and/or maintains media, buffer, reagents, solutions, cultures and related material for routine laboratory use.
  • Performs maintenance of equipment and apparatus.
  • Performs preparation of materials according to test specifications.
  • Maintains research related records and databases, entering data according to established protocols.
  • May distribute work assignments to employees at lower classification levels and initiate new employees into routines, procedures and operation of equipment.
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement:
Failure to maintain a high standard of work with consistent communication between team members and the supervisors will result in delays and quality of research output, which may impact the working conditions, reputation, and funding for the research group and UBC.

Supervision Received:
Works under general supervision in carrying out familiar phases of duties and responsibilities; receives instructions during orientation and on subsequent new assignments or changes in procedures.

Supervision Given:
May distribute work assignments to employees at lower classification levels and initiate new employees into routines, procedures and operation of equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience with maintaining day-to-day operations in the lab. High degree of motivation, enthusiasm, organization, and initiative. Ability to work independently and with other lab personnel. Effective oral and written communication.
