Machine Learning for Efficient and Unbiased Simulation in High-Energy Physics
The position is fixed-term for a period of four years and is offered subject to the approval of funding.
About the project
The position is part of the junior research group “Production-ready AI for unbiased simulation in high energy physics” led by Dr. Timo Janßen and funded by zukunft.niedersachsen. The High-Luminosity LHC will require simulated event samples of unprecedented size and precision, and producing them with established Monte Carlo methods is increasingly costly. The group develops machine-learning methods that accelerate event generation and phase-space integration while remaining unbiased, and makes them available to the community in a modular open-source library. The work is carried out in close exchange with event-generator developers and with the machine-learning and statistics groups at the Campus Institute Data Science (CIDAS).
The doctoral project will develop, implement and validate modern methods for event generation and phase-space integration, such as generative models, learned samplers or neural surrogates, benchmark them against established approaches, contribute to the group’s open-source library, and present the results in international journals and at conferences.
Your profile
- A Master’s degree (or equivalent), completed by the start of employment, in physics, computer science, data science, mathematics or a closely related field
- A background in at least one of the following areas: machine learning, scientific computing and particle physics; experience in a second of these areas is an advantage
- Experience with scientific programming, for example in Python; knowledge of C++ is a plus
- An interest in the mathematical and computational foundations of the methods you work with
- The ability to communicate scientific results in English, in writing and in discussion
- Interest in working both independently and together with others in an interdisciplinary team
Experience with machine-learning frameworks such as PyTorch or JAX, with generative models, Monte Carlo methods, collider phenomenology, high-performance or GPU computing, or with research software engineering is an advantage, but not a requirement. German language skills are welcome but not necessary, as English is the working language of the group.
