Professor John Chambers is the Toh Kian Chui Professor of Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Programme Director of the Population and Global Health Research Programme at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine), Nanyang Technological University. He is also the Chief Scientific Officer for the National Precision Medicine Programme. His research programme aims to identify the molecular mechanisms underlying diabetes and premature cardiovascular disease in Asian populations, and to translate these findings into new approaches for improved prevention and early detection of these major chronic diseases. To date, he had contributed and led studies which lead to publications in journals such as Nature, Nature Genetics, Lancet, etc.
Asst Professor Marie Loh is an Assistant Professor in the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London. Asst Prof Loh is a molecular epidemiologist with a long-standing interest in the role of genetics and epigenetics underlying ethnic differences in risk and outcome observed in complex diseases. She has received several awards for her work in transethnic studies including the ASHG/Charles J. Epstein Trainee Award for Excellence in Human Genetics Research (Semi-finalist) and the Young Investigator Award by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). She has contributed to publications in journals such as Nature Genetics and Nature and is involved in multiple local and international collaborations.
We are recruiting a Research Fellow who is competent in the analyses of methylome sequencing (whole and targeted), and transcriptomics (single cell, bulk – short and long reads) data, with the purpose of improving early identification and risk stratification of individuals with respect to cardiometabolic diseases (e.g. diabetes, atherosclerosis, CVD) in Asian populations.
The Research Fellow will play a key role in supporting both Professor Chambers’ and Asst Professor Loh’s research programme, mainly in, but not limited to, the following roles:
- Develop, optimize and maintain bioinformatics tools and pipelines related to next-generation methylation sequencing and transcriptomics data, in particular single cell and long-read sequencing
- Perform sequence and data analysis related to next-generation methylation sequencing and transcriptomics data
- Apply quantitative research techniques which include accurate in-depth assessment, interpretation and evaluation of large-scale omics datasets, including next generation sequencing and arrays based data sets, with a specific focus on methylation and transcriptomics data
- Dissemination of research results to the group, key stakeholders, wider biomedical research community.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, occasional educational and or instructional activities.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein (e.g. present at lab meetings, attend meetings with collaborators etc.).
- Liaise with research colleagues and support staff internally as appropriate to the research to improve research quality.
- Assist in co-ordination and organisation of meetings, taking down summary of meetings, seminars, lectures, talks and workshops and to attend and contribute to relevant meetings.
Key Competencies and Requirements:
- PhD in a related area, e.g., Bioinformatics/Computational Biology/Life Sciences/Computer Sciences/Epidemiology/Public Health/Statistics.
- Experience with R/Python/Java or similar languages and with Unix based platforms
- Experience working in a Cloud environment e.g. AWS
- Knowledge of next generation sequencing, in particular methylation, bulk and/or single cell transcriptomics, population (epi)genetics, statistics, bioinformatics or high dimensional data analysis
- Demonstrated in-depth knowledge, skills and expertise, with capability of leadership and achieving research excellence
- Excellent trouble shooting, organization skills, and problem-solving skills are also required as well as the ability to work in a team environment.
Training will be provided to level the skillsets needed to perform these roles.
