Manager of the Ambassador's Residence in Washington DC

  • The New Zealand Embassy in Washington DC is seeking a Manager for the Ambassador's Official Residence.
  • This is an exciting opportunity to utilise your hospitality skills and experience, your highly developed organisational skills, and your strong customer focus to deliver flawless events and representational entertaining hosted by the Ambassador and Embassy staff.

About the role - Korero mo te turanga

  • The Official Residence Manager is responsible for the day-to-day smooth running and effective management of the Ambassador's Official Residence and the organisation of official representation events at the Residence.
  • We are looking for someone with experience in a hospitality role with excellent organisational skills, a strong customer focus and good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • This is a hands-on role. You must be highly organised with well-developed planning skills, work well under pressure and have an ability to deliver flawless events where the details make the difference. Events and representational entertaining range from meals to large receptions showcasing New Zealand.
  • This is a full-time role with some non-standard hours as required for functions and events, including starting early for breakfast events and working late for evening receptions. It is a fixed term role for two years. The role is based in Washington DC and it is preferred that the Official Residence Manager `lives in' at the provided accommodation.

The salary range for this role is between US$45,241 to midpoint of US$53,225 total fixed remuneration, negotiable depending on skills, experience and whether living-in at provided accommodation. The Embassy provides a comprehensive health insurance package and 20 days of paid vacation per year.

We'd like to hear from you if you have the following skills and experience:

  • Preferably at least five years' experience, minimum two years' experience, in a hospitality role or other relevant experience
  • Proven ability to prioritise tasks, anticipate issues, problem solve and work under pressure
  • Well-developed planning and organisational skills
  • Strong customer focus and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people
  • Commitment to working to high standards with excellent attention to detail
  • Adaptability for this hands-on role that will require working flexible hours as required, including early for breakfast events and late for dinners and evening receptions.
  • Ability to work autonomously, relying on own judgement
  • Ability to adhere to a budget and keep accurate records for audit purposes
  • Personal integrity, discretion and an honest and ethical approach; strict observance of the Code of Conduct
  • Understanding of The Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti, Te Reo Maori and Maori customs and protocols would be beneficial.

The successful candidate must have the right to live and work in the United States. The New Zealand Embassy is able to support an application for an A2 visa, which is subject to a five year limit. This is a locally employed position, with terms and conditions being set in accordance with US employment regulations. No offshore allowance or transfer allowance applies.
