Position Title: Restorative Justice Caseworker

Type of Employment: Full-time, 35 hours/week, one year term with possible extension

Salary: $50 000

In addition to The Nova Scotia Restorative Justice Program, the caseworker will support the work of The John Howard Society. Our core activities include direct service provision, community education, research and resource development and advocacy.

Core Responsibilities

  • ·Restorative Justice Casework

Responsible for delivering practical casework in accordance with the NSRJP Protocols, RJ principles, and established practice standards. As part of the RJ Team for the Pictou, Antigonish, Guysborough regions, partner with Community Corrections in the delivery NSRJP. Working closely with the Restorative team to design and deliver principle-based RJ processes, through the provision of strategic guidance, mentorship, and practice-focused experience. Partner with other community-based RJ Caseworkers province wide, staff in the Restorative Initiatives Unit, Department of Justice to uphold a standard of excellence in NSRJP delivery and to identify and advance shared priorities and opportunities for growth

  • Justice Sector Collaboration

Liaise and develop effective working relationships with NSRJP referral sources (police, Public Prosecution Service, judiciary, Correctional Services, and victim-serving agencies) and other justice system actors (Nova Scotia Legal Aid, private defence counsel, etc.) to uphold and strengthen the restorative justice pathway in the Pictou, Antigonish and Guysborough regions.

  • ·Community sector collaboration

Liaise and develop effective working relationships with community and other organizations that support justice involved individuals who are facing specific experiences of marginalization and oppression. Foster and maintain relationships of trust with community organizations and services in Pictou, Antigonish and Guysborough Counties to support the design of inclusive and responsive RJ processes and to ensure referrals to supports and programming that meet participant needs.

  • Justice transformation

Work collaboratively with justice system actors, community-based partners, and other experts to champion a restorative approach to justice, as well as other initiatives focused on justice transformation, in Pictou, Antigonish, Guysborough Counties and across Nova Scotia.

Key Skills, Knowledge, and Competencies

  • Knowledge of The Nova Scotia Restorative Justice Program/Principals/Goals & Objectives
  • A good listener, able to sit with and connect with people
  • Trauma-informed, with the ability to be present with people in a way that makes them feel safe, heard and valued
  • Strong knowledge of the social determinants of health and their impact on crime and criminal behavior
  • Keen awareness of systemic barriers and issues facing marginalized communities
  • Strong computer skills required (typing, data entry and record keeping, creating documents and files, email correspondence, virtual meetings, etc.).

Education and Experience

  • Possession of an undergraduate degree in a relevant field, or equivalent, from a recognized and duly accredited school, and/or related education and experience. Proof of graduation/education must be provided by the prospective employee prior to completion of the employment agreement
  • Experience managing a caseload
  • Experience with group facilitation and conflict resolution skills
  • Experience working with marginalized and/ or criminalized groups
  • Demonstrated track record of working effectively within and across equity-seeking communities including consultation and consensus-building..

Employment and Working Conditions

  • This position is subject to the personnel policies of The John Howard Society of Nova Scotia.
  • Flexibility to travel throughout Pictou, Antigonish, Guysborough Counties and greater Nova Scotia, as required.
  • The position requires the use of a private vehicle and carry 2 million liability insurance
  • Must pass the appropriate Criminal and Child Abuse Registry checks
