Retail Sales Clerk

The Retail Sales Clerk will provide front-line customer service and help maintain a positive shopping experience. The position will also assist with receiving donations, displaying merchandise, processing payments, organizing, and cleaning.

This position is embedded in the Employment Program and is part of a team that is committed to reintegration, developing hope and skills while providing a healthy and supportive workplace.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Exemplify strong customer service and sales skills; process cash and card payments.
• Receive incoming donations; screening and sorting items according to quality standards and with reference to program & thrift store needs.
• Assist with moving furniture, including pickups and deliveries.
• Price, tag, and display merchandise.
• Manage customer complaints and concerns.
• Engage in loss prevention procedures.
• Dusting shelves, mopping floors, and other cleaning duties.
• Maintain a high level of professionalism and gratitude with all donors and visitors.
• Abide by all Health and Safety protocols and procedures (ex. incident reports, near misses) and attend coaching sessions & training course.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

• Good interpersonal and communication skills.
• Experience in a retail environment is an asset.
• Team player, who works collaboratively and has a teachable spirit.
• Willingness to be part of the Employment Program which involves personal & professional goal setting, accountability, and coaching.
• Empathetic towards, and ability to communicate with, individuals facing mental health, addictions, chronic illness, homelessness, poverty and related challenges.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Physical effort: moderate, periods of cleaning, sitting, standing, walking, indoors and outdoors (predominantly work indoors).
• Lift up to 50 pounds to sort, pack and move items.
• This position is often fast paced and requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem solve.
• Must be able to respond appropriately to intense situations, provide conflict resolution, work directly with clients at risk.

This may in a raised voice, or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.
