About the Position

Position Summary & Responsibilities: Safety Specialist (Public Sector)

The Industrial Safety & Health division of the Kansas Department of Labor is recruiting a dedicated Safety Specialist to support public sector employers in creating and maintaining safe, healthy, and compliant workplaces. This position plays a vital role in promoting safety awareness and regulatory compliance across state and local government organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct safety visits for public and state employers, including review of written safety programs and comprehensive walk-through inspections
  • Evaluate workplace conditions such as machine guarding, electrical hazards, work practices, housekeeping, and overall employee safety
  • Prepare detailed written reports summarizing site visits, documenting hazards (including photographs), and recommending effective methods for abatement and program improvement
  • Provide informal, on-site training and guidance to assist employers in achieving compliance and enhancing safety practices
  • Support the development and implementation of SHAPE (Safety and Health Achievement Program) initiatives within the assigned area
  • Assist in delivering OSHA 10-hour courses and other safety training programs as needed

Professional Development

  • Attend training sessions, seminars, and conferences to maintain current knowledge of evolving technologies, standards, and regulatory requirements

Additional Duties

  • Conduct special assignments and investigations as required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5 years verifiable experience in Safety, accident prevention, industrial hygiene or related field
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and corrective techniques
  • Valid Kansas driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health; Environmental Health and Safety; Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management or related field.
  • OSHA training (e.g., 30-hour or 40-hour courses)
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
