We are looking for Senior / Research Scientists (4) to join our Quantum Sensors team at Espoo!
Our team is part of VTT’s Microelectronics and Quantum Technology research area. The international quantum teams consist of experts working on superconducting electronics, quantum computing technologies, cryogenic CMOS, semiconductor qubits, semiconductor and graphene transistors and circuits, graphene-based bolometer detectors, and solid-state coolers. The group offers expertise in device simulation and design, nanofabrication in Micronova cleanrooms, and characterisation in cryogenic laboratories. Research is conducted collaboratively with other VTT teams, research partners, and customers both within Finland and internationally. The team participates in various European quantum technology research projects and national initiatives and supports VTT’s approach to advancing quantum computing and sensing technologies aimed at addressing global challenges.
We are seeking qualified experts to support the establishment of Pilot Line facilities dedicated to European quantum semiconductor initiatives. These pilot lines will serve as advanced centres for research, development, testing, manufacturing, and design within the microelectronics sector. The facilities will be available to a wide range of stakeholders, including academia, research institutes, SMEs, and industry partners. Funding for pilot line development is provided by both the European Commission and EU member states.
What we are looking for:
- You have a doctoral degree in physics, engineering physics, materials science, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related field.
- Proven hands-on experience with microelectronics/nanoelectronics, especially clean-room process development, e.g., EBL.
- Familiarity with characterization methods such as SEM, EDX, profilometer, and/or electrical characterization.
- Experience in superconductor and/or semiconductor physics and electronics.
- Interest in participating in hands-on clean room work for developing fabrication processes and effectively resolving routine challenges.
- Additional qualifications considered an asset: experience in Python/Matlab coding, cryogenic measurements, electronics design, device design, and modelling.
Your responsibilities include:
- Improving and developing clean-room processes for cryo-electronics and quantum devices (such as quantum dots, spin qubits, cryo-CMOS and superconductors).
- Performing related characterization to validate the process.
- Documenting and reporting of the process development to communicate results with other researchers and groups at VTT.
- Addressing nanofabrication challenges and solving complex technical problems.
- Designing process flows in collaboration with device designers.
- Providing guidance to junior researchers and overseeing the work of clean-room operators.
- Collaborating closely with team members at VTT to address issues.
- Participating in the preparation of project proposals and dissemination of results via journal articles.
As a person, we hope that you:
- Have strong communication skills and can interact with colleagues from different fields.
- Are an open-minded and innovative person with a vision of longer-term research needs.
- Are a team player who can also work independently, willing to innovate and eager on having new challenges and responsibilities.
- Are enthusiastic and proactive and have a strong passion for science and research and development.
- Practical in establishing experimental research and well-motivated for developing new approaches and concepts for the future.
