Secondary Gatekeeper/Dam Operator –

Square Pond Dam

The City of Sanford is seeking a dependable individual to serve as a Secondary Gatekeeper / Dam Operator for Square Pond Dam, with occasional backup support at Emery Mills Dam.

This stipend-based role supports the safe operation and basic monitoring of the dam system. Responsibilities include observing water levels, operating gates as directed, performing routine visual inspections, and responding to changing conditions or high-water events when needed. The position plays an important supporting role in flood prevention and community safety.

The Secondary Gatekeeper may also assist with communicating water level information to residents or coordinating with City staff and emergency officials during elevated water conditions. Basic recordkeeping and reporting are part of the role.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Experience with outdoor, mechanical, or hands-on work is helpful but not required; training will be provided. Applicants must hold a valid Maine driver’s license and be reliable, safety-minded, and able to follow procedures.

This is a stipend position paying $5,097 annually, paid in monthly installments during the first pay period of each month. Work is performed primarily outdoors and requires the ability to do light to moderate physical work in varying weather conditions, as well as availability for occasional after-hours or emergency response.
