We are looking for a (Senior) GenAI Engineer to join the UPM AI Center of Excellence. This unit supports UPM's AI transformation projects and acts as a catalyst for AI adoption across the organization. This is an excellent opportunity to join a team of experts and do pioneering AI work in the heart of the renewable and sustainable materials industry. The position is located in Helsinki, Finland.

Welcome to our team, where you’ll play a pivotal role in enabling AI transformation and adoption across UPM. In this role, you will be owning and driving the Agentic AI capability of our AI Platform. You will architect and deliver production-grade agentic and conversational AI solutions that enable real business impact. What you will do:
- Agentic System Design & Development: Lead the design and implementation of Agentic AI capabilities, including agents, multi-agent systems, and agent orchestration services to enable scalable, production-grade agentic and conversational AI solutions.
- Governance & Compliance: Define, document, and promote best practices, standards, and guidelines for Agentic AI, ensuring compliance with responsible AI principles and regulations and supporting the sustainable scaling of agentic solutions across the organization.
- Collaboration & Support: Work closely with cross-functional AI project teams including data scientists, engineers, IT, infrastructure, and business stakeholders, providing technical expertise and support for building and deploying Agentic AI solutions. Ensure efficient adoption of existing Agentic AI capabilities and prepare new capabilities for production use.
- Technical Leadership & Direction: Evaluate and select technologies and tools for Agentic AI, ensuring robustness, scalability, and maintainability. Facilitate technology decision-making processes and shape a coherent AI technology landscape with AI tech leads, IT platform owners, and architects.
- Continuous Learning & Innovation : Stay at the forefront of Agentic AI by tracking emerging trends and translating state-of-the-art research and prototypes into production-ready, impactful business solutions. Mentor and train junior engineers in Agentic AI technologies and best practices.
Who you are:
We are looking for a motivated GenAI Engineer with strong hands-on experience in building and scaling agentic AI solutions in Azure. In this role, you will design and implement LLM-based systems, multi-agent workflows, and cloud-native architectures that support our industrial use cases.
You should have:
- Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field
- Proven experience designing, deploying, and scaling GenAI and agentic solutions on Azure
- Strong practical knowledge of LLMs, multimodal models, prompt/context engineering, and RAG integrated with enterprise search
- Experience with multi-agent workflows, Semantic Kernel, and pro-code environments (e.g., Azure AI Foundry)
- Advanced Python skills and familiarity with modern ML/GenAI frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, Hugging Face)
- Hands-on experience with cloud-native engineering and MLOps practices (Azure DevOps, Docker, Azure Container Apps)
- Ability to design and implement robust APIs and microservices (e.g., FastAPI, REST APIs)
- Understanding of security, authentication, access control, monitoring, and Responsible AI governance in production environments
- Strong problem-solving skills, curiosity, and willingness to stay up to date with modern agentic protocols and standards (e.g., MCP, A2A)
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading technical work
- Excellent communication skills and fluency in English; comfortable working in multicultural and virtual teams
