Job Introduction
BBC News is one of the world’s most watched news channels, bringing breaking news and analysis to millions of viewers in the UK and around the world.
The BBC’s Singapore bureau leads coverage for multiple hours every day, reporting the most important stories both across Britain and globe, as well as covering the day’s biggest breaking news. We’re investing in the team that makes that happen.
Successful candidates will play an integral part in a team that is redefining and reimagining the relationship between digital and linear news both on air and online.
We are looking for a multiskilled Senior Journalist to produce and output daily live rolling news coverage for the BBC News channel.
Main Responsibilities
You will need an eye for a good story, and the vision and ability to turn it into great television. That will involve writing scripts, editing video, creating graphics, booking guests and briefing presenters.
You’ll also be putting together running orders and running live broadcasting from the production gallery. It will take a cool head, a flair for making great TV and rock-solid editorial judgement – often under the pressure of breaking news. There may also be the opportunity to do some on-air reporting.
The job doesn’t stop at television; you’ll need to be well-versed in digital news production – from using social media to dig out exclusives to understanding what audiences want from video online.
You will have substantial experience in television, radio and/or multi-media production as a Producer or Journalist. You will also have commitment, motivation and a passion for reporting the news.
This is a newsroom-based role.
Are you the right candidate?
The successful candidate must have:
- A high standard of editorial judgment, writing ability and production skills based on substantial broadcast journalism experience.
- Thorough knowledge of UK and World news, and the ability to recognise stories with great potential for compelling television
- Proven experience overseeing live and breaking news coverage in a rolling broadcast or live blog
- Able to work under pressure and meet multiple daily deadlines both on-air and online, with an approach to work that is characterised by commitment, motivation and passion
- The flexibility to work across different shifts and at unsociable hours
- Understanding of the latest television news production techniques and experience of putting your skills to the test in a high-level newsroom
- Demonstrable video editing and graphics production skills
- Experience in digital news production – especially video, live-blogging or live-streaming
- On-air television news experience would be an advantage but not essential
