Job Introduction
The Money, Work and Technology team reports on stories of regional and global importance, providing insightful analysis, original stories and explanatory journalism for audiences in the UK and around the world.
The Singapore bureau leads the BBC’s business coverage across all of Asia-Pacific. We report on business, economics and technology for all of the BBC’s platforms - digital, television and radio. Our reporting is accurate, impartial and clearly explains complex topics to a wide audience.
We are looking for an energetic and experienced Senior Journalist – Reporter to provide expert and engaging reporting on the most important business stories of the day.
Main Responsibilities
You will excel at reacting to breaking news, bringing insight to business, economic and technology stories from Asia Pacific and around the world. You will be expected to pitch stories, ideas and treatments, including graphics, video and audio that enhance your daily reporting and engages audiences.
We are looking for someone who enjoys the demands of live reporting in television, radio and digital formats, and who possesses warmth and credibility on-air. You will have a conversational style that connects with audiences and have excellent on-air rapport with presenters and other colleagues. You will also be skilled at writing short explainers or analysis for live coverage online.
You will have a knack for breaking down complex issues, explaining them clearly and in a manner that resonates with non-specialist audiences. Your detailed knowledge of business and economic issues combined with your expert storytelling skills means you will be equally at home discussing the impact of Fed policy on Asian economies as well as how TikTok content creators make money.
In this role, you will be expected to work independently and to tight deadlines. You will also work collaboratively with teams, both in the bureau and remotely. You will be adaptable to the needs of a live newsroom and expected to work flexibly across other roles, if required.
This is a newsroom-based role.
Are you the right candidate?
The successful candidate must have:
- Outstanding knowledge of business and economic affairs, particularly of the US and Asia
- Excellent editorial judgement and a proven ability to translate complex issues and concepts into stories accessible to a broad audience
- An ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
- Proven editorial judgment and flair as well as the ability to make valid decisions quickly
- Broadcast experience on air, specifically live reporting, would be a major advantage. A clear understanding of what makes good live television and radio.
- Thorough understanding of the production process for radio and television
- Demonstrated experience in generating original ideas and identifying stories and trends.
- Excellent writing skills and an understanding of the importance of impartiality and journalistic values
- A self-starter who excels at working independently as well as collaboratively with teams
- Flexibility and willingness to work unpredictable hours if needed
- Adaptable in a changing news environment and enthusiasm to take on other responsibilities when required
- High level of interpersonal and communication skills, especially working in a multi-cultural environment. Strong team-working skills needed - must be able to work collaboratively in an environment where news is constantly changing.
