This position is a maternity leave replacement, and it is vacant for the period of absence of the member of staff. From 29 November 2026 onwards, there will be the possibility of a temporary extension of the contract to the extent and for the duration of the position holder’s absence.

Your future workplace is at the Department of Political Science in the research area of International Politics.
The Department of Political Science, a subunit of the Faculty of Social Sciences, addresses all major fields of political science. It is dedicated to innovative and problem-oriented research and provides students with a wide range of specialisations. Members of the Department study the transformation of governance, statehood and democracy across different policy areas, geographical regions and political areas.
The research area of International Politics offers you exciting research projects, collegial and interdisciplinary cooperation and exchange with a young and interested generation of students. Our research focuses on current geopolitical changes, international environmental, raw materials and climate policies, as well as politics and development models in Latin America. They are partly oriented towards the term "Imperial Mode of Living" and the research approach to "Historical-Materialist Policy Analysis" (HMPA).
Your future tasks:
The primary area of responsibility is the establishment of long-term research structures and the acquisition of third-party funds in the research area of International Politics (Univ. Prof. Dr. Ulrich Brand). The tasks include organisational activities as well as tasks of academic self-administration at the department and teaching level.
Active participation in research and administration is expected, this implies:
Participation in the establishment of the new English-taught Master’s programme “Governing Socio-Ecological Transformations”, which begins on 1 October 2026
Participation in research projects and organisation of international conferences (in particular, an international conference on recent research on the “decarbonisation state”)
Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance
Participation in research, teaching and department administration
This is part of your personality:
Completed doctoral/PhD studies in Political Science
Excellent knowledge in the field of International Politics
Good knowledge of qualitative methods of empirical social research
Proven ability to publish in renowned, relevant media
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Excellent command of written and spoken German and English
IT user skills
Ability to work in a team
Also expected:
Experience in participating in research projects
Experience with international lecturing
Teaching experience in political science
Desirable:
Knowledge of university processes and structures
