Tailor Your Resume for this Job

If you’re an experienced builder or carpenter who wants steady work, respect, and the chance to earn more by working smart — not longer hours — this may be the role you’ve been looking for.

Miller Fence & Deck has been building quality fences, decks, and outdoor structures across Vancouver Island since 1988. We’re a small, established company with strong values — and we believe our people are the company.

We’re looking for experienced builders and carpenters who take pride in solid work, care about clients, and want a clear path to leadership while earning good money doing work they feel good about.

This role includes performance-based incentives for builders who work efficiently, take ownership, and deliver consistent quality.

Why Join Miller Fence & Deck

We know good builders have options. People choose to work with us because:

  • We value our workers — your skill, effort, and attitude matter here
  • You’re treated with respect, not micromanaged or talked down to
  • Year-round work on Vancouver Island (no seasonal layoffs)
  • Small, skilled crews — not chaos, not revolving doors
  • Clear growth path: Builder → Crew Lead → higher earnings
  • Good work-life balance for outdoor trades, with stable schedules

We want people who feel proud of what they build, enjoy working with their crew, and go home knowing they did honest, solid work.

Outdoor, Year-Round Work

This is hands-on, outdoor construction work on Vancouver Island.

  • We work outside year-round, including during rainy months
  • Proper rain gear and preparation are part of the job
  • If you enjoy being active outdoors and don’t mind West Coast weather, you’ll be comfortable here

If you’re looking for indoor or weather-dependent work, this role may not be the right fit.

You’ll Fit Right In If You:

  • Have experience in carpentry, framing, decking, fencing, or renovations
  • Take pride in straight, square, professional results
  • Appreciate being rewarded for productivity, not clock-watching. Our incentive structure is designed so builders who work smart, stay organized, and finish jobs efficiently can earn more without working longer hours.
  • Communicate clearly with teammates and clients
  • Respect client homes, properties, and job sites
  • We’re not just offering a paycheck. We’re looking for people who want to build a stable, long-term career — where working efficiently, taking ownership, and doing quality work leads to consistent income and a comfortable life over time.
  • Are comfortable with hands-on, outdoor work year-round on Vancouver Island (including rainy months) and come prepared with proper rain gear and a professional mindset
  • Have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle
  • Fence/Deck -specific experience is an asset — but not required.

What You’ll Do

  • Build fences, decks, and outdoor structures to company standards
  • Read plans, think ahead on layout and materials
  • Maintain clean, safe, organized job sites
  • Work directly with clients in a professional manner
  • Mentor helpers as you grow toward a Crew Lead role
  • Take increasing ownership over quality, pace, and outcomes

What We Offer

  • Steady, well-managed work We handle the marketing, scheduling, quoting, and client communication so you can focus on building — not chasing jobs or dealing with uncertainty.
  • Owners who have your back We believe our builders are the company. We support our crews, stand behind them with clients, and work to remove friction — not add it.
  • A strong local reputation Our long-standing presence on Vancouver Island means fewer problem clients, clearer expectations, and work you can be proud to put your name on.
  • Flexible working models Whether you prefer a traditional employee role or are interested in a contractor-style path over time, we’re open to structures that reward skill, efficiency, and ownership.
  • Competitive pay with upside Competitive wages (based on experience) plus performance incentives that reward productivity, quality, and professionalism — not just hours worked.
  • Health & stability Flexible Health Spending Account (HSA) after probation, year-round work, and a culture focused on long-term stability rather than short-term burn.

Compensation & Incentives

  • Competitive hourly wage, based on experience
  • Performance incentives tied to:
  • Job efficiency and time management
  • Quality workmanship and low call-backs
  • Job completion checklists and professionalism
  • If you build efficiently, take ownership, and deliver clean work — you will out-earn standard hourly trades.

If you build efficiently, take ownership, and deliver quality work, you will earn more here than in a standard hourly role.
