Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

About the role

The Cancer Support Psychology & Social Work team at Middlemore Hospital is seeking a Social Worker to make a meaningful difference in the lives of cancer patients and their whanau. This is a key role within our cancer services.

Are you a Social Worker who brings enthusiasm, innovation, and a desire to work collaboratively in a small team to support cancer patients in achieving optimal outcomes? The Cancer Support team addresses the psychosocial needs of patients, from early investigations through to the end of treatment. This position involves working closely with one other social worker and several health psychologists, as well as liaising with other healthcare staff and various community organisations.

We are looking for candidates who are compassionate, work well in a team environment, and demonstrate professionalism and a strong commitment to improving patient outcomes and addressing health inequities for cancer patients.

The role includes providing a comprehensive social work service to individuals and their families through psychosocial assessments and supportive interventions across community settings. Occasional home visits are required, so a full driver’s license is essential. Additionally, there will be opportunities to contribute to staff education, service development, and research initiatives.

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic health professional with experience in health social work, either within a community or inpatient setting. Attitude and alignment with organisational values are key attributes. While a senior social worker is preferred, we will also consider enthusiastic new graduates with experience in health settings.

Essential

  • Registered Social Worker with SWRB and a current APC
  • Experience in health social work
  • A high standard of report writing
  • Full, clean driver’s licence

What we can offer

  • Annual practicing certificate is refunded
  • Funding for professional development opportunities
  • Regular supervision and support to continue to develop your knowledge and skills
