Currently, the department has 16 professors supported by lecturers, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral students, and technical staff. In total, the number of personnel is about 115. The department and school have well-equipped research infra and access to national scientific computing services. We are located at Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Espoo where several research institutions and organizations have their laboratories.
The duties in the position
-
active research work which results in publications in high impact journals
-
active networking and collaboration with other research teams in the field
-
active promotion, leadership, and management of competitive funding applications to support the research group
-
development, maintenance and monitoring of the ICONIC (Integrated Construction Innovation and Collaboration) research facilities and devices including the spaces, videowall, VR/AR/MR equipment, computational hardware, photogrammetry software, numerical modelling software
-
instruction of B.Sc., M.Sc. and D.Sc. students in Geoengineering topics
-
contribution to teaching on Geoengineering MSc level courses for example (but not limited to) Rock Excavation, Rock Mechanics, Rock Construction, Field Experience and Project in Hard Rock Mining
-
participation in arranging in the European Mining Course master’s programme
We are looking for applicants with
-
a doctoral degree in geoengineering or mining engineering or a related field, with emphasis in hard rock engineering
-
familiarity with drilling, blasting, excavation technologies, and mining/tunnelling operations
-
research experience in geoengineering or rock engineering or mining
-
skills in photography, photogrammetry, laser scanning for geometrical data collection
-
software skills in numerical modelling and photogrammetry
-
experience in teaching MSc level courses and being responsible for course design and delivery
-
experience of instructing Master’s theses and contributing to field teaching
-
capability for both independent work and teamwork
-
high level communication skills, fluent oral and written English
-
experience in project management and researcher experience in national and international projects (e.g. EU, Business Finland, and Research Council of Finland). The majority of Staff Scientist salary comes from projects.

The successful applicant will join a young and dynamic team of world-class researchers at Aalto University’s School of Engineering. Salary and contract terms
The Staff Scientist position will be permanent. The starting salary will be set according to Salary System for Universities. The starting date can be negotiated but it should be in January 2026 at the latest.
