Job Description:

Airbus' team plays a vital role in supporting those who secure, preserve, prevent, and defend. With a profound expertise in crafting mission-critical solutions, we're not just changing the game in aerospace, we are creating a better-connected, safer and more prosperous world.

We offer advanced communication and collaboration solutions, compliant with the highest standards of security and reliability, both for mission and business critical users. And we need new minds to join our journey to break the borders of the ordinary.

By joining our trainee programme, you accumulate expertise that becomes the powerful force propelling your career forward. If you're interested in exploring and working within a multicultural workplace with unique opportunities, this is your chance.

Read more about your job as our Standardisation Trainee!

This is your chance to get your fingerprint into international standards that are the foundation of all Mission Critical solutions in the world, those from Airbus as well as those from all our competitors.

You will be working as part of our small but very experienced standardisation team. In this role you will also have regular discussions with system architects, software engineers, product business management, strategic marketing and other relevant experts.

Your first concrete task is already waiting for you with a well defined scope and schedule. It will be to write a number of change requests to 3GPP Mission Critical standards. After this first task, and if you find standardisation work interesting, you can select other, even more demanding topics to work with. In this job you can easily find a topic even for your Master’s Thesis.

Your working days include a lot of reading, analysing, searching, thinking and writing. Google Gemini will help you to navigate through the thousands of pages in the relevant standards documents and significantly fasten your learning curve, if you just know what to ask from it and understand its limitations. For writing these standards and change requests GenAI is not yet good enough so we expect you can fluently write English using MS Word and create figures using MS Visio.

We already know that the start will be demanding as you will face a huge number of new terms, features, definitions etc and you have to dig deep into complex technical standards to be able to perform your first task. But we will teach you all the details needed in this job and you are never left alone. We do expect you to be proactively asking questions and seeking help while you are learning. We will also have regular meetings to share our work and ideas and brainstorm together. In addition to our internal meetings, there are a big number of (online) meetings by the standardisation groups and industry associations where you may be asked to participate.

The duration of this trainee period is 6 months and will start as agreed in April or May. The position is full-time during summer months 2026 and part time (at least 2 days per week) during other times.

Who do we see working in this trainee position?

Our trainee programme is aimed at those currently pursuing their studies at university or university of applied sciences.

For this position we are looking for a university student preferably from some field of technology. Telecommunications would be obviously a perfect match, but we are more interested in your capabilities than the exact subject of your study programme.

If you already have a basic knowledge of 4G and 5G mobile communication networks and you understand what is behind the terms like core network, radio access network, server, client, interfaces, protocols, protocol layers etc, your first days in this job will be much easier.

We don’t expect you to have software background, but as we are developing standards that will be mostly implemented as software applications, it would be a great benefit to understand how the protocols you will be developing can actually be implemented. Genuine interest in AI and capability to create agentic AI applications could give you an opportunity to use your skills to help streamlining our working processes. However, this would not be your first task and is not a requirement to succeed in this trainee position.

Then, if you know something more about Android and IOS than them being smartphone operating systems, even better.

Finally, before submitting your application, we recommend you to briefly read through 3gpp.org and look a bit closer into SA WG6 since this is the group where your first task in this job will be focusing on.

Otherwise, this job requires an analytical mindset and good nerves. We value your enthusiasm for personal development and growth. You're someone who dares to take initiative and follow through. If there's something you're unsure of or need assistance with, we're here to help. Success in our work comes from our collective efforts.

Our regulated environment and high expectations sometimes call for perseverance and resilience from us. We hope this doesn't scare you.

English serves as the working language. Our multicultural workplace offers you the chance to brush up on your language skills. Proficiency in other languages like Finnish, Swedish, German or French will help you but is not a requirement.

The position requires basic security clearance approval from Finnish authorities.

What happens next?

You can apply for this trainee position until 31st January 2026 . Please apply by submitting your CV and cover letter through the link provided below.

We aim to conduct the interviews in weeks 9-10 with the candidates best suited for the position. Any changes in the recruitment process structure will be communicated to the applicants.

If you have any questions regarding this position, working with us, your future colleague and mentor, Jukka Vialén, will be happy to provide further information. You can reach him by phone +358 40 180 6260 during 28th of January between 9-11 EET.
