Compensation: Up to a maximum salary of $52,500.00 annually.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The State Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC) facilitates the implementation of suicide prevention strategies at a state level through education, monitoring, and coordination activities. The incumbent will have experience in developing, implementing and evaluating comprehensive, population-based primary and suicide prevention programming. The SPC will have demonstrated skills in organizing and managing multiple complex job duties and have the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. The SPC will be responsible for building and maintaining effective working relationships with a number of agencies and organizations including federal, state and community-based, the suicide prevention crisis lifeline, Attorney General's office, and Veteran Service Organizations.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Suicide Prevention

Collaborate with the Prevention Program Manager and other staff to create operating procedures, objectives, priorities, methodologies, and goals for suicide prevention programs utilizing the Strategic Prevention Framework. Manages administrative and fiscal oversight to all agreements, contracts and grants related to suicide prevention. Facilitates KDADS cooperation with SAMHSA and SPRC regarding federal suicide prevention initiatives. Develop positive and supportive relationships with community partners. Support and encourage the continuation of the of a Statewide Suicide Prevention Coalition, including but not limited to being a KDADS non-voting member. State Suicide Prevention Coordinator will work directly with the GLS Project Manager and will serve as the official responsible for the fiscal and administrative oversight of the grant. Serves as a sustainability expert and finance expert working with state officials, agencies and contractors.

Program Coordination and Development

Work with the Executive team and Coordinator of the Statewide Suicide Prevention Coalition to coordinate the Suicide Prevention Workgroup meetings at least twice a year to update and review the Kansas Suicide Prevention Plan. Assist in the development and implementation of a State-Wide Suicide Prevention Plan. Support the development of state suicide prevention infrastructure. Collaborate with state and federal suicide prevention programs, including the Attorney General's office, to track current suicide demographics and statistical data and identify appropriate prevention strategies to target populations at risk. Engage community members in defining their needs and participating in decision making. Create long-term goals of the suicide prevention program and the priority short-term goals and objectives that will further that vision and have the most impact. Develop and submit funding requests and grant applications for suicide prevention.

Program Compliance and Improvement

Participates in special projects, committees, and workgroups as assigned, including, but not limited to the GBHSPC’s Prevention Subcommittee. Respond to requests for technical assistance and other inquiries from contractors and coalitions regarding evidence-based programs, policies and best practices in suicide prevention. Monitors reporting to ensure timely and accurate reporting, compliance with grant requirements, and compliance with any state or federal regulations, laws or policies. Represent KDADS and Kansas at the federal level with SAMHSA and SPRC serving as the State Suicide Prevention Coordinator. Attends annual State Suicide Prevention Coordinators meetings, webinars, and TA opportunities provided by the SPRC. Attend the Annual American Association of Suicidology conference.

Additional Responsibilities

Completes special projects and performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to ensuring the agency is adequately staffed during and immediately following natural and/or manmade disasters, infectious disease outbreaks, and/or acts of terrorism. Assists other employees in the work unit in accomplishing assignments as necessary.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirement:

  • Four years of experience in behavioral or social services, human services, education, public administration, or any combination of experience and education equivalent to three years of experience related to human/social services.
  • Knowledge and/or training of evidence-based prevention methods
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Travel Required

Preferred:

  • Six years of experience in counseling, social work, psychology, public health, public administration, sociology, education or other health-related field and/or four years of clinical or suicide prevention experience.
  • Ability to develop strong collaborative working relationships
  • Ability to develop, implement and monitor performance of contractors and grantees
  • Experience and or knowledge working with Suicide prevention in Kansas or with the current Suicide prevention efforts in the state.
