The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.

The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) at the University of Luxembourg brings together expertise from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, social and educational sciences.
People from across 20 disciplines are working within the Faculty. Along with the disciplinary approach a very ambitious interdisciplinary research culture has been developed. The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) covers a wide range of fields: Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences, Education and Social Work, Geography and Spatial Planning, Humanities and Social Sciences. The faculty’s research and teaching focuses on social, economic, political and educational issues with the common goal of contributing to an inclusive, open and resourceful society. We offer 12 Bachelor and 22 Master degrees and a Doctoral School providing our students with the necessary knowledge and high-qualified skills to succeed in their future career.

Our Doctoral School is well positioned to draw strength from its social and territorial ties. We offer you targeted training programmes in a variety of disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transferrable skills courses to support you in achieving your academic and professional objectives. Our supervisors not only conduct research in different academic fields but are also well connected in Luxembourg and beyond with access to specialist institutional bodies, educational organisations, and private sector sponsors that have robust ties with us through our alumni network. Our graduates often decide to stay in Luxembourg and work in a diverse number of settings, from private sector to academia and international institutions. Our Doctoral School Programmes are Education, Humanities, Psychology, and Social Sciences with over 130 supervisors in a diversity of expert fields.

It assists doctoral candidates in performing cutting-edge research in humanities and social sciences by:

  • Providing them with a comprehensive and individually targeted training programme in disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transferable skills, to enable them to meet their individual research goals
  • Connecting them with each other and with expert research and teaching staff across the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and further afield, thereby building supportive research networks that will last a lifetime
  • Engaging them in activities that will enable them to take full benefit of the collaborative, interdisciplinary and multicultural research culture of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Supporting their international mobility through travel funding for conferences and summer schools and research grants for fieldwork
  • Fostering their professional development through advice and opportunities that will enable them to refine their career goals and improve their employability both within and outside academia
Your role

The job holder work within the existing team to ensure high-quality programme delivery and a positive experience for all PhD candidates of the Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences:

  • Inform potential and registered PhD candidates concerning admission, courses, schedules and internal procedures
  • Communicate with supervisors, Programme Directors, and other staff of any changes in policy, updates and programme issues
  • Organise and coordinate courses, as well as related logistics and travel arrangements for external teaching staff
  • Handle registrations to courses, record study progress, and execute related administrative tasks
  • Follow up on budgets, handle invoices, purchase orders and other similar financial tasks
  • Assist in the organization of the meetings of the Doctoral School Board, prepare relevant documentation and follow up on decisions taken
  • Support internal and external communication, including keeping the web pages of the Doctoral School up to date
  • Maintain processes and procedures in line with the Faculty and University guidelines
  • Organise events, meetings, conferences, PhD defences
Your profile
  • Educated to Master level, ideally in the field in humanities and social sciences
  • Experience of using IT systems and databases
  • Knowledge of MS Office is required
  • Excellent command of English and German, French and Luxembourgish are an asset
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate with a range of stakeholders
  • Service-minded and ability to manage priorities and work proactively
  • Well-organised, autonomous, and rigorous
  • Good team player and ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment
