Overview:

A. Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

This position functions within the Addiction Recovery Center for Men which is a component of Legacy Human Services, Inc. The Addiction Recovery Center for Men is a halfway house that serves adult males, ages 18 and older, who are in the process of recovery from problems associated with substance abuse and addiction. The Addiction Recovery Center for Men operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year. Its purpose is to provide a structured living environment in which the clients can practice the life skills necessary for recovery as they take steps toward gainful employment and independent living.

B. Primary Purpose of the Position

The primary purpose of these part time positions is to serve as a presence and a resource within the facility, as well as to serve as a role model for the clients in residence in the facility. The position may answer the telephone, monitor client activities, provide personal care services and transport clients, secure the facility, monitor the health and safety of the facility, manage emergencies, and implement the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of Legacy Human Services, Inc. These tasks are performed after-hours or in the absence of the Director of Substance Abuse Services, the Program Director, or the Facility Manager. The Substance Abuse Aide may also perform these and other tasks when instructed to do so by the Director of Substance Abuse Services or the Program Director.

C. Work Schedule

Because of the nature of residential services, the Substance Abuse Aide may be called upon to provide coverage for the facility, to sleep in the facility, or to perform other appropriate tasks when requested by supervisory personnel.

II.

A. Duties and Responsibilities (Sequential Order)

1. Provide monitoring of clients in residence at the halfway house when on-duty.

a. Assure that all clients are in the facility before securing the facility.

b. Assure that clients are behaving appropriately and are complying with the agency’s rules and regulations while in the facility.

c. Implement consequences for client violation of agency rules or regulations when instructed to do so by supervisory personnel.

2. Perform client transportation

a. When necessary, transport clients to recovery, educational, vocational, recreational, medical, or social service activities.

3. Assure the health and safety of the clients.

a. Be familiar with the needs of each client and be prepared to intervene when medical problems occur. Be familiar with and implement steps necessary to prevent transmission of disease through blood and air borne pathogens.

b. Be aware of the procedures for handling emergency situations in the halfway house or agency vehicles and take appropriate action in accordance with procedures.

c. Identify and remedy any special hazardous condition in order to maintain the program site in a safe and sanitary manner.

d. Maintain current certification in First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

4. Provide feedback to the Program Director.

a. Meet regularly with the Program Director to report on any client or facility problems that may have occurred during the employee’s shift.

5. Other duties as assigned

a. Complete any duties and assume any responsibilities as assigned by the Program Director or the Executive Director.

III.B. Other Position Characteristics

1. Accuracy Required in Work: Accuracy in implementing the policies and procedures of the Addiction Recovery Center are essential. Clear and coherent communication in all interactions is essential to the health and safety of clients and staff.

2. Consequences of Error: Consequences are commensurate with the nature of the error. The work of this position directly affects the clients and family members, as well as the overall operation of the Addiction Recovery Center for Men, Legacy Human Services, Inc., and other agencies and the community.

3. Instructions Provided to the Employee: The Substance Abuse Aide receives a minimum of once weekly support, supervision, and direction from the Program Director. The Program Director is available daily for any urgent issues that may arise. Supervision of the Substance Abuse Aide focuses on the status of the clients, problem solving and direction, review and planning, and training and information sharing and dissemination. This instruction is usually oral and of detailed information. Occasionally, written instructions may be issues for specific tasks.

4. Guides, Regulations, Policies and Procedures, Used by Employee: The Substance Abuse Aide uses NC Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services Standards, Division of Health Service Regulations Standards and Licensure Rules, Federal and State Confidentiality Guidelines, Human Rights Rules, ADA Guidelines, and Legacy Human Services, Inc. Policies and Procedures.

5. Supervision Received by the Employee: The Substance Abuse Aide meets at least weekly for a half hour with the Program Director for supervision. Problem solving is the focus of supervision. The employee’s work performance is evaluated annually by the Program Director.

6. Variety and Purpose of Personal Contact: This position interacts daily with clients, staff, family members, other agency personnel, and members of the community at large. The purpose of this contact is to assist in meeting client needs as well as meeting the agency’s requirements. Contact is for the purpose of enhancing each client’s life skills development, educational needs, vocational needs, or recreational and social needs.

7. Physical Effort: This position must be physically capable of writing, speaking, observing the clients, performing household tasks, and, occasionally, participating in recreational activities with the clients.

8. Work Environment and Conditions: The Substance Abuse Aide works in a clean, well-lit, air-conditioned and heated facility located in Henderson, NC.

9. Machines, Tools, Instruments, Equipment, and Materials Used: The position may use motor vehicles, mowers, gardening tools, recreational equipment, kitchen and household appliances, cleaning agents, as well as office supplies, equipment, and materials.

10. Visual Attention, Mental Concentration, and Manipulative Skills: Visual attention and mental concentration is essential to adequately supervise clients to ensure client safety. Manipulative skills are required to operate the equipment mentioned above.

11. Safety for Others: It is essential that this position have excellent visual and auditory observation skills, oral communication skills, and acute power of mental concentration, and complete physical capabilities. Adherence to agency policies and procedures is crucial.

12. Dynamics of Work: Changes in Standards, Rules, Guidelines, Policies, Procedures, and Regulations can have a direct impact on this position. Unexpected staff coverage problems and inclement weather can interfere with this position’s work schedule which may increase the position’s work schedule with very little advance notice.

IV. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, and Experience Requirements

A. Knowledge of addiction. Knowledge of the dynamics of addiction. Knowledge of withdrawal signs and symptoms. Knowledge of communicable diseases. Knowledge of residential service provision. Knowledge of crisis intervention and management, and behavior management techniques. Ability to supervise others effectively. Ability to receive supervision, follow instructions, and communicate effectively with individuals on all levels. Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to handle stressful situations and use good common sense. Must exhibit patience and be a good team player. Must have good vision and hearing.

B. Graduation from high school is preferred but not required. Recovering persons may be given special consideration but must have a minimum of one year of sobriety. Experience in a residential setting is preferred. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

C. A valid North Carolina Driver’s License is required.
