Our main maternity sites are Middlemore Hospital, Kidz First Hospital, Papakura Birthing Unit, Botany Downs and Pukekohe birth units.
We are part of Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, the overarching organisation for New Zealand’s national health service. HNZ leads the day-to-day running of the health system, with functions delivered at local, district, regional and national levels.
Purpose of the Position:
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated midwife to be a Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI) Prevention Coordinator to join our team at Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau Health. This role plays a crucial part in coordinating, delivering, and developing the SUDI Prevention Education Programme, aimed at promoting safe sleep practices, infant health, and wellbeing across our health workforce, external agencies, and communities.
As a registered health professional, you will work to improve health equity and outcomes for infants, children, and their families by delivering high-quality, evidence-based education on Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI) prevention, with a special focus on Māori and Pacific communities. You will play a key role in managing the pepi pods and wahakura stock levels,, developing relationships with maternity services, health professionals, and community partners.
Key Responsibilities:
- SUDI Prevention Education & Infant Wellbeing Practices: Engage, coordinate, and deliver education on SUDI prevention, including safe sleep messaging, the importance of smokefree environments, breastfeeding, immunisation, and early midwifery care.
- Baby Bed Distribution & Support: Distribute safe sleep beds and provide associated education across multiple services, ensuring vulnerable infants receive the resources they need.
- Mentorship & Support: Provide mentorship to Safe Sleep Champions, coordinating and leading monthly forums to build networks and build communities focused on safe sleeping and SUDI prevention.
- Health Equity Leadership: Champion initiatives to improve health equity for Māori and Pacific whānau, working within the framework of the Treaty of Waitangi to reduce disparities in infant health outcomes.
- Collaboration with Health Services: Engage with a wide range of services including Maternity, Kidz First, Smokefree, Breastfeeding, and other health and social agencies to support integrated care for infants and families.
- Develop Innovative Communication Strategies: Implement creative methods to communicate safe sleep practices, adapting to different learning styles and resource needs, prioritising health literacy.
Essential:
- NZ Registered Midwife with current NZ Annual Practicing Certificate
- Minimum of 3 years clinical experience, ideally in maternal and child health
- Proven experience in educating health professionals and delivering professional development and learning activities
- Experience in working with diverse populations, particularly Māori and Pacific communities
Preferred:
- Post-graduate qualification in Population Health or Maternal and Infant Wellbeing
- Knowledge of Quality Improvement practices/methodology
