Summer Camp Babysitter, Cairn Family of Camps

Reports to: Camper Care Coordinator, Assistant Directors

Supports: Children of camp staff

GENERAL FUNCTION

The Babysitter ensures that any children of camp staff are provided with a safe, enjoyable experience. They work to supervise, care for, and lead age-appropriate activities for the children within their care. For the 2026 camp season, one babysitter will be providing care for one or two 2-year-olds, and one babysitter will provide care for two siblings aged 4 and 6. They act as a care-giver, friend, confidant, mentor, and role-model, and promote the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual growth of each child. Babysitters may live on-site or off-site for the duration of their contract.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

All-Staff Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate strong support and commitment to the mission and core values of the Cairn Family of Camps.
  • Demonstrate strong support and commitment to serving the campers, staff, families, and all program participants of the Cairn Family of Camps.
  • Practice and support the health and safety of all campers, staff, families, and all program participants of the Cairn Family of Camps.
  • Complete additional duties as required.

Babysitting Responsibilities:

  • Ensure child safety and wellbeing is prioritized in all actions and decisions.
  • Supervise children during parent work hours (typically breakfast to dinner, although exceptions may be made depending on the parent’s job responsibilities).
  • Facilitate meal times with children, ensuring they are receiving a balanced meal with food prepared based on their age and development (i.e. cut into pieces, no choking hazards etc.)
  • Prepare and facilitate daily activities for children that are age-appropriate, based on children’s interests, and designed in collaboration with parent requests.
  • Support children with personal hygiene and personal care needs, including changing clothes, choosing appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear, applying sunscreen, changing diapers, toileting, brushing teeth and hair, eating and drinking, and nap time.
  • Communicate regularly with children’s parents about the daily activities, toileting, personal care, naps, physical wellbeing, and any issues that arise throughout each day.
  • Provide attention to all children, showing compassion, understanding, and modeling positive behavior.
  • Ensure that at least one staff person is always with the children.
  • Ensure that children are safe, maintain adequate personal health and hygiene, are fed and hydrated sufficiently, and follow all camp rules.
  • Address physical and social-emotional needs, with support from the children’s parents, Camper Care Coordinator and Assistant Directors.
  • Participate in camp life and provide support in other areas of camp as needed (i.e. interact positively with campers, attend staff community times, assist with camper programs as directed, help cover hours off, etc.)

JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • An interest in developing skills in child and youth care and development. Previous experience working with children and youth is an asset, but not required.
  • Experience in a Leadership program or Counsellor-In-Training program an asset.
  • Personal Skills: empathy, compassion, creativity, problem-solving ability, growth mindset, adaptability, collaboration
  • Standard First Aid/CPR-C
  • National Lifeguard Certification or ability to obtain certification prior to the summer camp season is an asset.
  • Clear Police Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Mandated training (including AODA, Workplace Violence & Harassment, Health & Safety Awareness, Child Protection, etc.) is required before or shortly after commencement of work
