QUALIFICATIONS


  • Grade 12 education (MB Standards)
  • Knowledge of surgical suite clean up, appropriate use of disinfectants
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Training, as delineated in Prairie Mountain Health Policy PPG-00002 CPR Training
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, and the ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility to facilitate changes in techniques and procedures in a changing environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge and competence of skills and concepts related to the position
  • Demonstrated communication skills

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Care Team Manager of the Surgical Suite, the Surgical Aide is responsible for assisting the team in preparing the Operating Room theatre, equipment, porting of patients for surgery, terminal cleaning of the theatre post operatively and porter patients from Recovery Room as directed. Surgical aide adheres to universal precautions in performing housekeeping functions and adheres to special infection control precautions related to the Operating Room environment, theatres and equipment. Surgical Aide will transport patients, equipment and other supplies as directed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overview:

1. Transports patients to and from the Surgical Suite.

2. Assists with transferring patients to the surgical table, and back to the stretcher.

3. Assists with holding and position patients.

4. Assists with moving equipment within the theatre.

5. Transports patient charts, specimens to lab and blood products to Operating Room theatre.

6. Collects urgent supplies and equipment from other areas of the hospital and distributes to appropriate areas in the Surgical Suite.

7. Collects soiled linen and supplies from all areas of the Surgical Suite and sends to the appropriate departments.

8. Strips stretchers, beds and chairs after each patient use.

9. Cleans the Operating Room theatres after each case per regional policy. Removes all laundry and garbage, wipes down the surgical bed, wipes equipment such as EKG cables, cautery cables, etc.) wipes down all tables in the theatre and equipment used, including the lights and phone and mops the floor.

10. Transports soiled case carts to soiled receiving room and send carts to MDR via elevator.

11. Disposes of fluid from suctions canisters and reassembles same.

12. Changes circuits and filters on the anesthetic machine as outlined.

13. Terminally cleans the Operating Room theatre and Recovery Room bedsides after an infectious case.

14. Damp dusts all areas of the Surgical Suite including Recovery Rooms areas.

15. Stocks all warming cupboards with listed solutions and blankets in all warming cupboards within the Surgical Suite.

16. Regularly cleans all supply carts with sterile products per cart cleaning schedule.

17. Cleans and fills soap dispensers.

18. Orders supplies as required.

19. Ensures sterile product sent up from MDR will be put away on dedicated carts.

20. Disposes garbage and linen according to policy

21. Exchanges empty oxygen and CO2 tanks and replace with new ones.

22. Replenishes sterile supplies in Operating Room theatre.

23. Ensures there are adequate supply of scrub brushes, masks and bouffant hats at scrub sinks.

24. Ensure clean Operating Room scrubs are distributed between both male and female change rooms, and will remove soiled scrubs from change rooms.

25. Follows prescribed surgical suite dress code; wears PPE as required for specific duties.

26. Other duties as assigned.
