Position Information

Para Meadows School, located in North Wollongong, supports students with additional needs. Our school enrols students K-12 with a moderate to severe intellectual disability. Students may have a secondary disability which may include complex medical needs, sensory needs, physical needs, autism and/or complex behaviours. The staff are committed to delivering high-quality education for all students. Of the 120-student enrolment, 24% require support in the form of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) and 19% identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Teacher Librarian will create an inclusive, accessible and engaging library that meets the diverse learning, communication and sensory needs of students with moderate to severe intellectual disability and additional support needs. The successful applicant will demonstrate expertise in adapting literacy and library programs using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), visual supports, assistive technology and differentiated resources to maximise student participation and independence. They will work collaboratively with teachers and support staff to embed literacy, communication and information skills across the curriculum while fostering a positive, welcoming learning environment that supports every student's engagement, wellbeing and lifelong love of reading.


Selection Criteria

Approval to teach library or currently enrolled in librarian qualifications approved by the NSW Department of Education, with approval to teach special education and/or demonstrated experience teaching students with moderate to severe intellectual disability.
Demonstrated ability to design, adapt and deliver high-quality personalised literacy plans for students with complex needs, using explicit teaching strategies to improvelearning outcomes.
Demonstrated ability to model, implement and promote effective multi-modal AAC strategies, supporting students with complex communication needs to access information, engage in learning and participate in meaningfully in library and educational environments.
Demonstrated ability to respectfully embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, histories and cultures into library programs and literacy experiences, while working collaboratively with Aboriginal students, families, local community members and staff to create culturally safe, inclusive and accessible learning environments for students with complex learning and communication needs.


Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.


Special Notes

This is a permanent part-time position of 3 days per week, 0.6FTE.
Applicants are to include details of their WWCC clearance number as part of this application.

If applicable, engagement will be temporary until successful completion of the Teacher Librarian qualifications as recognized by the NSW Department of Education which must be completed within 24 months

Additional Information
