Advertised Job Summary The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of South Carolina in Columbia is seeking qualified applicants for one full-time 11 – month, non-tenure, professional track faculty position at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor in transportation engineering. Transportation engineering supports the department's focus on intelligent and sustainable infrastructure through the planning, design, operation, and management of transportation systems. We seek candidates whose expertise align with this vision. The position is located in Columbia, South Carolina, with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2027. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the department's undergraduate and graduate programs in transportation engineering. Duties of this position are to (1) teach introductory level and advanced level courses in transportation engineering, which may include introduction to transportation engineering; transportation systems planning; traffic engineering and operations; highway design; transportation systems analysis; and courses focused on multimodal transportation, safety, freight, and transportation data/technology; (2) support transportation-specific laboratories, field experiences, and student engagement with transportation agencies and industries; (3) contribute to and shape the transportation engineering curriculum through the integration of emerging transportation technologies and data-driven methods, development of new and innovative courses, and continuous improvement through assessment of student learning outcomes and contributions to ABET accreditation activities; (4) engage in professional development and teaching-related scholarship; and (5) participate in appropriate department and college level service. The successful candidate may also teach foundational civil and environmental engineering courses according to departmental needs. Minimum and Additional Requirements

Required Educational Experience Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely related field, have expertise in transportation engineering, and a demonstrated record of, or strong potential for, effective teaching. Relevant areas of expertise may include, but are not limited to, traffic operations and safety, transportation systems planning, multimodal mobility, freight transportation, connected and automated vehicles, and resilient transportation infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications Successful candidates should have (1) professional engineering licensure or progress toward licensure; (2) relevant professional experience in transportation engineering practice, government agencies, consulting, or industry; (3) record of developing engaging, student-centered instruction using active learning, field-based experiences, laboratory activities, simulation tools, and emerging transportation technologies; and (4) strong interpersonal skills with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
