Be part of our Community Health and Development Team, driving fairer, safer, and more inclusive communities. The team brings together portfolios in access and inclusion, positive ageing, and health and wellbeing, and plays a highly visible, community-facing role built on strong relationships with local groups, networks, and individuals.
As the Team Leader Health and Equity, you’ll be at the heart of community-led change, working alongside local groups, networks, and individuals to turn ideas into action. You’ll help deliver community-led and place-based initiatives, while supporting key strategic projects. With a strong focus on collaboration and innovation, you’ll ensure community voices shape programs and policies that are inclusive and responsive to local needs.

What you will bring to the role

To thrive in this role you’ll have:
- A genuine commitment to equity and inclusion, along with personal qualities such as empathy, resilience, and the ability to influence and inspire others.
- Experience providing leadership across health, wellbeing, ageing, and inclusion programs, with the ability to drive positive community outcomes.
- Strong knowledge of gender equity with the capability to embed Gender and Equity Impact Assessments across projects, policies, and services.
- Well-developed stakeholder engagement skills, with confidence in building strategic relationships across community, government and advisory groups.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build organisational capability and strengthen equity-focused practice across an organisation.
Key selection criteria
Mandatory qualifications, experience and requirements
- Tertiary qualifications and/or substantial management experience in Gender Equity, Health, Human or Community Services, or a related discipline (qualification check will be conducted).
- Proven experience in gender equity, social services, and/or organisational development.
- Expertise in community development principles and approaches, with a strong understanding of the needs of diverse population groups.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a range of programs within designated timeframes.
- Experience working effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including those with varying levels of understanding of gender equity, access and inclusion, positive ageing and community health and wellbeing.
- Exceptional strategic, operational planning, and policy development skills.
- Strong leadership experience, including managing diverse teams and fostering a productive team culture.
- A track record of building and maintaining trust and respect with internal and external stakeholders.
- A strong cultural fit with Council’s purpose, direction, and values.
- Ability to independently plan, manage, and prioritise tasks with minimal supervision.
- Highly developed written and verbal communication skills.
- A current Working With Children Check
- You have the permanent right to live and work in Australia
- Police Check results that are suitable for this position (will be arranged by Surf Coast Shire Council).
A complete international criminal history check is required if the person has worked or lived overseas for any period of time OR a complete national criminal history check is required if the person has only ever worked in Australia.
Desirable qualifications and experience
- Experience in a Local Government community services environment.
- Staff supervision experience in a relevant field.
