SUMMARY

The Field Service Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of security systems, including alarms, CCTV cameras, access control systems, data and fiber optic, and other related technologies. This role requires strong technical skills, customer service abilities, and the capacity to work independently in various locations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Install and configure security systems, including alarm systems, video surveillance (CCTV), access control systems, data and fiber optics and other security-related technologies at customer locations.

• Perform fusion and mechanical splicing of fiber optic cables.

• Work under the direction of the Senior Field Service Technician or Project Supervisor on assigned tasks, and ask for help when unsure of a procedure or a safety step.

• Test and commission installed devices so each one is mounted, wired, terminated, addressed and reachable on the network, then hand it to the help desk for system programming.

• Perform regular maintenance, troubleshoot, and repair security systems to ensure they operate optimally.

• Address malfunctions, replace faulty components, and resolve technical issues efficiently.

• Diagnose issues with security systems on-site or remotely and resolve them quickly to minimize downtime.

• Perform upgrades to existing systems, replacing outdated equipment and ensuring compliance with the latest security standards and technologies.

• Track and maintain an inventory of parts and equipment necessary for field operations.

• Ensure equipment and tools are well-maintained and readily available for service calls.

• Stock company van with tools and supplies.

• Complete the daily job record in the company platform before the end of each workday: hours, lunch and breaks, travel, work performed, delays and time lost, materials used, where devices were landed or terminated, and anything different from the scope of work.

SAFETY

• Follow all safety regulations, company safety rules and industry standards, and ensure installations meet local codes and regulations.

• Use ladders, scaffolding and aerial lifts safely, with fall protection where required, and inspect them before use.

• Treat line voltage as live: de-energize and follow lockout/tagout before working on power supplies, door hardware or any circuit above low voltage.

• Take care in ceilings, crawl spaces and older buildings -- unknown wiring, debris, possible hazardous materials -- and check with the supervisor before proceeding when conditions are unclear.

• Wear the PPE the task and the site require (eye protection, gloves, hard hat, high-visibility clothing, respiratory protection when required).

• Report every injury, near miss and unsafe condition to the supervisor and Human Resources the same day.

• Drive company and personal vehicles safely and legally on company business -- no handheld phone use while driving -- and follow the Employment Manual's driving and vehicle policies.

• Do a pre-trip inspection of the assigned company vehicle, keep it clean and stocked, and report maintenance needs, damage and accidents to the Field Operations Manager the same day.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think on your feet and resolve technical issues in a timely manner.

• Strong customer service skills, with the ability to explain technical details clearly and build rapport with clients.

• Capable of lifting and installing equipment (may involve climbing ladders, working in tight spaces, and handling heavy equipment).

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially when dealing with customers and documenting service work.

• Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. Must be able to travel to various job sites and manage multiple service calls.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

• High School diploma or GED required.

• Two years of experience in structured cabling and fiber optic installation preferred.

• Experience with conduit bending and pathway systems preferred.

• Previous work on government, healthcare, or educational campuses preferred.

• Industry-specific certifications such as NICET, BICSI installer certification (Level I, II or Technician), FOA CFOT, OSHA 10 or 30 preferred.

• An associate’s degree or certification in electronics, electrical systems, or a related field is a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Field-based role requiring travel to customer locations. Capable of lifting equipment, climbing ladders, and working in tight spaces. Must be able to handle heavy equipment and work in various environmental conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Field-based, requiring travel to customer locations for installations, repairs, and maintenance. Flexible hours with some evening or weekend work depending on client needs. Must provide own hand tools; company may supply specialized tools and safety equipment.
