Job Description


The opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

We are looking for a Technician to support the laboratory operations and equipment set up for first year undergraduate laboratory teaching in the School of Biological Sciences.

You will be tasked with providing technical support in a range of specialties such as biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, anatomy, and chemistry. Maintaining ongoing health and safety compliance within the labs and in all aspects of your position will be an important part of your role.

Main Accountabilities (not limited too):

  • Support the ongoing operational requirements for first year teaching laboratories
  • Assist the course coordinators to plan and implement teaching activities
  • Preparation of materials and equipment for first year laboratory sessions
  • Ensure consumables and materials are purchased and stocked appropriately to meet planned activities and undertake inventory functions and any due diligence as required

This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), permanent position

Ideal start date – February 2025

Remuneration is between $62,400 - $73,401 per annum, dependent on skills and experience

Mō tō mātou rōpū | About the team
The Faculty of Science’s Technical Services Team comprises over 100 technical staff providing specialist support to the Faculty’s academic staff and students across 9 of the 10 Departments. They contribute technical knowledge and expertise to research and teaching activities while ensuring the ongoing operation and compliance of a vast range of laboratories, workshops, teaching facilities, research equipment, vehicles and boats.

This position supports the School of Biological Sciences (SBS) which currently employs 150 academics supporting over 160 research students and 1000 undergraduate and coursework students, across a wide range of disciplines organised into three key discipline areas: Biomedical and Human Biology, Cellular, Molecular and Physiological Biology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

He kōrero mōu | About you
Ideally, you will have at least 2 years of experience working in a laboratory setting and some experience in a laboratory teaching environment. You must have a Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology or a related field.

You should also:
  • Be confident in the use of basic laboratory equipment
  • Have strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping skills
  • Have excellent time management skills and the ability to plan ahead and prioritise
  • Be able to work flexible hours
