REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Site Manager

SUMMARY OF FUNCTION

  • The Tenant Companions are multifunctional workers who are responsible for assisting with the provision of personal care, dressing, transfers, mobility, medication reminders, light housekeeping and laundry duties, assistance with meals, recreational programs and escorting tenants within the building.
  • The Tenant Companion will work in collaboration with the Site Manager and the Fred Douglas Society to achieve the Mission, Philosophy and Goals and objectives of the Society.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Completion of Grade 10.
  • Health Care Aide course from an approved college is preferred.

Professional:

  • Two (2) years of related work experience.
  • Ability to provide safe, effective personal care in a manner that considers each individual’s need for comfort, privacy and respect is essential.

Personal:

  • Good physical and mental health.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate fluently in English.
  • Sincere desire to work with the elderly.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Practice:

The Tenant Companion will perform assigned nursing interventions to meet the physical and psychosocial needs of the tenant.

Promotes Personal Hygiene By:

  • Assists/provides shower or sponge bath.
  • Assists/provides peri-care as required.
  • Assists with shaving.
  • Assists/provides skin care, hair, nail care and dental hygiene.
  • Assists tenant to dress (i.e. laying out of appropriate clothing, cueing and direction if required to dress appropriately).
  • Assists with bed making.
  • Demonstrates use of safe body mechanics at all times.

Promotes And Provides Supportive Care:

  • Supports/assists tenants in activities of daily living.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of tenant routines and lifestyles.
  • Encourages and promotes independence in the performance of appropriate tasks.
  • Allows the tenant to make own decisions unless otherwise instructed.
  • Demonstrates empathy and kindness in communicating with tenant and family members.
  • Demonstrates an ability to listen objectively, to accept tenants’ beliefs, values and lifestyles and taking them into consideration when caring for tenants.
  • Demonstrates respectful behavior when providing care.

Promotes And Maintains Exercise And Rest:

  • Assists with transfers and ambulation of tenants as required, while promoting independence and ensuring comfort and safety.
  • Plans and promotes adequate sleep, rest and relaxation.
  • Assists in planning and provision of meaningful Recreation Programs for tenants.

Promotes And Maintains Nutrition:

  • Sets out continental breakfast each a.m. and assists tenants who wish to come down for breakfast.
  • Assists tenants with meals, as required.
  • Escorts tenants to and from meals, as required.
  • Knowledgeable in dietary requirements of tenant.
  • Makes available between meal snacks at designated times.

Promotes And Maintains Elimination:

  • Provides reminders and cueing if indicated to maintain continence.
  • Utilizes incontinent product of choice by tenant, if required.
  • Advises Site Manager of any change in status of elimination/continence.
  • Charts appropriately and accurately on flow records.

Assists Site Manager In Performing Therapeutic Measures:

  • Applies TED stockings as directed.
  • Assists/provides Recreational Programs.
  • Provides medication reminders to tenants.
  • Reports difficulties with tenant medication to Site Manager.
  • Assists with admission, discharge and transfer of tenants.

Promotes And Maintains Safety:

  • Practices principles of mechanical, electrical, chemical safety and accident prevention.
  • Uses principles of body mechanics and medical asepsis at all times.
  • Is knowledgeable of the Fire Plan and equipment operation, Disaster Plan, Emergency Paging Codes and Search Policies.
  • Reports all safety hazards to the Site Manager.
  • Utilizes appropriate resources for maintenance requests.
  • Responds to tenant needs promptly.
  • Provides supervision to tenants and intervenes as needed.
  • Utilizes safety devices as directed, i.e. bathing systems, grab bars, brakes, seat belts, leg extensions, etc.
  • Uses equipment safely, according to proper operational requirements and material safety in accordance with WHMIS/MSDS standards.
  • Wipes up spills immediately.

Performs Other Assigned Duties:

  • Cleans equipment as required.
  • Ensures cleanliness/tidiness of utility rooms, kitchens, lounges, dining rooms, activity areas, bathrooms, common rooms and other related work areas, according to work routines.
  • Maintains adequate supplies in designated areas.
  • Escorts tenants to and from dining room, activities, etc.
  • Performs any clerical duties as assigned.
  • Maintains accurate Clinical Records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintains and respects tenants’ rights, maintains dignity, individuality and independence.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information.

Functions As Part Of Interdisciplinary Team:

  • Performs care as directed by Site Manager.
  • Prioritizes care according to tenant needs.
  • Organizes daily workload and is available to assist others.
  • Recognizes and reports changes in tenant health functioning to Site Manager.
  • Requests guidance and receives direction in a positive manner.
  • Works cooperatively, utilizing a team approach.
  • Participates constructively in staff meetings and other meetings as assigned.
  • Recommends changes to work environment.
  • Participates in Daily Report, Staff Development and Quality Improvement Programs.

Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Works within the framework of the Fred Douglas Society Mission, Vision, Philosophy and Goals and Objectives.
  • Works within the framework of Heritage House policies and procedures.
  • Reviews departmental policies as assigned.
  • Practices economical use of supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains privacy and confidentiality of all information relating to tenants.
  • Participates in continuous Quality Improvement/Risk Management Programs.
  • Grooming and apparel is to be appropriate to the facility.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff, volunteers, tenants and families, as required.
  • Participates in family review meetings, as required.
  • Conducts self in a mature manner and displays a positive work ethic.
  • Participates in a self-evaluation in conjunction with the formal performance appraisal.
  • Maintains own knowledge base to fulfill the requirements of the position.
  • Participates in educational sessions when offered to maintain own knowledge base.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $16.72-$19.56 per hour

Expected hours: 16 per week

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Evening shift
