Thesis - Image Based Motor Position Calibration/Refinement
Job Title
Thesis - Image based motor position calibration/refinement
Job Description
Category
Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or similar
Scope
Two students, 15/30hp
Background
Motorized cameras rely on knowing the relative motor position as well as the camera direction angles e.g. pan, tilt, and roll. In many cases there is no feedback of the motor positions and the positions are based on knowing the relative movement from a known state. The accuracy of the absolute position depends on many different factors, including mechanical accuracy as well as the method used for calibrating the system.
During development/use of cameras with PTR (pan, tilt and roll) functionality there is a need to measure the absolute positions of the motors in and the camera direction angles. This information can be used in many scenarios to assess the system performance.
The goal is to use image based feedback on motor positions in two setups.
1) Develop a test setup (fixture) to measure the position accuracy of the camera during development and assess the accuracy achieved with an image-based approach.
2) Develop an image-based calibration method to find the reference position/(s) by analyzing images which show parts of the camera internals. The result should be used to compare the accuracy of the image-based method to the existing method.
Goal
Scenario 1: Image based measurements of positions in a fixture
  • Identify distinct features in the image.
  • Correlate the identified features to angle coordinates, pan, tilt and roll of the camera to calibrate the motor positions
Scenario 2: Image based measurements of positions without a fixture.
  • Identify features in Images showing parts of the camera itself.
  • Calculate pan, tilt, and roll angles based on the identified features and compare with the reported camera angles. Comparing the reported camera position with the ones calculated from the image features can be used for detecting issues with the camera's positioning system.
